Bikes and Bike Theft

How big is the issue of bike theft on campus? I have a pretty nice bike that I'm thinking about bringing, and of course I'll keep it locked up, but I've heard plenty of stories.
Would it be worth bring a crappy bike for peace of mind?

Bike theft is a problem at every school campus; what beats snatching up a bike from a forgetful college kid who is very into their studies? Hey money is money…

Yes of course. Although it stinks even more to have your crappy bike stolen aswell by thieves because you used a corresponding crappy lock with your crappy bike. Get a proper U - lock (from a real bike store, not walmart garbage) or 2 if you plan on keeping your bike.

Here in the bay area where I reside, I work in a cyclery and numerous students from UC Berkeley, CSU’s, UCSF, you name it come in to store to tell us to keep an eye out for their stolen bike… they usually get schooled about proper locks and locking method. And sad to say, once its gone, its gone.

I would also like to stress multiple U locks for people who own fixed gear bikes or “fixies”, as thieves know they WILL fetch up a pretty penny due to popularity.

@leuky- what kind of U-lock would you recommend? I have a Kryptonite but I guess it’s like “walmart garbage” since I got it from there.

Well from economics class in high school you learn that walmart products are specially made by manufacturers to be of lower quality; therefore the cheaper price you see at walmart.

You want a Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 lock (you can only find these at bicycle stores and REI), ~HINT~ it should have a orange rubber cover over part of the lock shackle if you havent already seen them in the back pockets of hipsters skinny jeans.

thanks for the response. :)

No problem.

I didn’t think any of my suitemates’ bikes would get stolen, but sure enough, one did by the end of my first year in Sixth college…

and the guy knew what he was looking for too, because he chose to take my roomate’s professional racing bike over everyone else’s poorly-locked one.

Make sure you lock it to not only one of the wheels, but the FRAME as well…

well seems like I’ll be heading to REI or TREK real soon. Thank god they’re both only about a mile away.

it’s kinda weird though, that bike stuck to the lamp post seemed to be there for months already.

Also, are seat locks advised? When I was in Japan my school had like a secret competition of stealing each others seats. (Someone would get theirs stolen, so they would steal another persons, that person would steal another, and so on)
