Bikes at Cal

Do you advise bringing them? I am staying at Clark Kerr so is that more of a reason to bring one?

The advice I give you now is advice I have seen or heard from current students and members of this board: Don't. If you really want a bike you are going to have to settle with getting a cheap or old looking bike as they are frequently stolen. Since you are going around campus this shouldn't matter much.

I was going to bring my bike or buy a used/old looking one but decided against it due to the high theft. Just seems like more of a hassle than it's worth.

Oh yeah, and I will be living right near Clark Kerr..I plan on walking or taking the bus.

If you gave a high-quality U-Lock, then theft should not be a problem.

have* 10 char

You could have just edited your initial post...

it's up to you. some of my friends who lived at clark kerr used theirs just to get to campus, and then they locked it up and walked. it also might help if you have to go from one corner of campus to another. but if you bring a bike, be smart about it. make sure you have a good lock, lock it properly, and don't bring something expensive.

I was not going to bring one and then found an old one to take with me. Is the theft rate really that high?

You'll be surprised how many people are victims of bike theft at cal.

My wife has had 2 bikes and a bike seat stolen and she isn't even a student here. You might say she's "prone" to such things, just don't tell her I said that.

If you buy a good lock you should be fine.

even if you get a good lock you aren't necessarily "fine". it just betters your odds. i've heard of so many people having issues with bikes (including myself - and i had a good lock on it). it just doesn't seem worth it (and i lived at clark kerr). if you are going to bring a bike my best advice is to bring a really bad-looking one. then everytime you park it next to one, the one next to it will always look better. also it's not a bad idea to not lock it in the same place each time since then it looks like it's being used, if it's being watched.

have you used a good-quality U-Lock? hmm?

you cant just have a lock, you have to know how to use it efficiently

I'm sure a person who is intelligent enough to go to Berkeley can use a mere bicycle lock correctly and efficiently. Don't you think?

Then why are so many bikes getting stolen? I would think ppl at berkeley would be smart enough to buy a decent lock?

does having a REALLY REALLY crappy looking bike, help fight off thefts?

"I'm sure a person who is intelligent enough to go to Berkeley can use a mere bicycle lock correctly and efficiently. Don't you think?"

The thieves have had years of counter berkeley-student experience.

i think 2 u-locks could possibly be best (for both wheels). if you use a u-lock (on the frame and wheel) and connect it to the wire so that that's protecting the other wheel, that wheel can easily be taken. same with the seat, etc.
