Bikes at Cornell

Have my son starting as a freshman in August. Can current or former students let me know what they think about having a bicycle on campus? Is it helpful in getting to and from class? Can you store it safely, etc? Do the dorms have storage areas for bikes or you have lock it up outsoide? Any insight, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated. He wont have a car so would be his primary mode of transportation.

Given size of campus I would think it would be of value especially during the nicer weather.

Bike storage is easy enough in the dorms and there are racks all over campus. That said, if your son is not into biking much now, I don’t see them getting into it at school. The hilly nature of the campus is a pretty large deterrent to biking for most people.

Yup, as Mikeyc765 said, there are bike storages in dorms and racks all over campus. But yeah, I thought I’d have a bike on campus too and while a lot of people do bike & there are bike lanes on the street and such, it’s so hilly that I feel like I’d just be walking my bike uphill the majority of the time :P

Useless, in my opinion. Especially since I was uncomfortable riding in ice/snow.

Folks, thanks very much for the input. He is not a biker, so he would really just be using it to get around campus or for short trips to town, etc.

Sounds like he is better leaving it at home.
