I'm starting to get into road biking, but for obvious reasons would prefer not to lug a bike 3000 miles across the country only to discover I have to keep the thing locked in my room...are the bike racks there covered? And, are there any places to take a road bike (ie paved surfaces) in the DC area that are accessible to someone without a car?

The bike racks are not covered, adn Gtown is surrounded by cobblestone.

The bike racks are not covered, and Gtown is surrounded by cobblestone. DC is super accessible by foot, we all do it. Most of my friends with bikes, either use it purely for exercise, or they just rust awy through the winter. I'd recommend you didn't bring one.

Sorry about the 2 messages my comp is crazy!

That's what I figured. This would be more for fun/exercise than transportation, but I don't want to deal with a super expensive bike outside in the winter. I'm a spoiled Californian!

Riding along the C & O Canal is terrific for exercise, and only Georgetown proper has a lot of cobblestone. But you might want to just pick up a cheaper bike here than bring a really expensive one across country. Then you wouldn't have to worry about it being left outside.
