bikes at UIUC

Can a bike be helpful to get around at UIUC? Are there enough safe paths to ride a bike? Are there any paths off campus if you want to go riding recreationally?

Bikes exist in huge numbers at UIUC and there are bike racks at every dorm and class building. Many at distant dorms use them to go to class before the weather makes it undesirable to do so and then again in the spring. Not sure of off campus paths but there are areas particularly south of campus that are mostly rural. Biggest risk is theft of bike as a number get stolen annually.

There are plenty of safe paths to ride a bike on. Obviously in CU there are sidewalks, so you can ride all over the two towns. The campus bike paths take you out past the south farms as well.

I would definitely bring a bike. Just bring a cheap one or something that isn’t flashy.

I’m thinking about bringing a bike, but my only question is what do people do with them during the winter? Wouldn’t they start to rust if they got buried in too much snow?

snow isn’t too much. bikes are fine – just don’t get a real expensive one. bikes get stolen too.

thanks for the info.

are these restricted use bike paths that go to the south farms?

Restricted use? no. The south farms are surrounded by main roads.

Invest in a quality lock for your bike. Oh, bikes aren’t just for getting to classes; U/C has some beautiful neighborhods for enjoyable fall exploring…

Bikes got stolen a lot…

do the thieves use cable cutters usually, or do they pick bikes that were not locked at all?

I was wondering how strong of a cable I s/ buy.

I’m getting a U-lock. They’re a lot more secure.

I just ordered this one ([Amazon.com: Avenir Standard U-Lock and Cable Lock Duo: Sports & Outdoors](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KVOVPC)) from Amazon yesterday. It’s inexpensive, has great reviews, and it comes with a cable lock too. I think the U-lock alone is only like $16.
