bikes

what bikes do you guys ride? which do you recommend that’s lightest and has good handling? At a good price too.

I will probably be attending Davis this fall (transfer) and would like see what you guys recommend.

You’ll see a variety of bikes here. I would recommend anyone to get a good quality mountain bike. If you want a lighter bike, get a road bike or a fixie (although they cost much more than a mountain bike). Don’t get a cruiser. They’re slow and not well suited for transportation. If cost is an issue, look around on Craigslist.

fixie is light and amazing!

Fixie is really light and fast but it’s really sensitive on bumpy surface (or even little pebbles on a flat surface). It’s typically $300 or up. I currently have a mountain bike and hope to get in UCD to use it more. I’m a biker, I ride my bike everyday but in UCD it’s much more essential and FUN!

mountain bikes? ah okay…i know squat about bikes so i will probably visit the bike barn several times my first quarter. lol

I wouldn’t advise going to the Bike Barn. It’s run by students, always busy, and expensive. There are so many bike shops around town that will give you better service for a lower price. But you’ll probably either learn how to fix common problems or make friends with someone who’s good with bikes by the end of the first quarter anyways.

^ expensive? really? i would’ve thought they’d be cheaper since students were the employees. shoulda known, lol.

darn… i’m kind of sad now that I now know that the barn is expensive :(

speaking as a parent, i agree that the bike barn is a ripoff. u really only need a sturdy everyday bike (like the type u get at target or somewhere like that). spend the money you save on a good lock.

if you have something small tho, the bike barn is EXCELLENT. they always know what it is, are super polite, and will fix it for you for free usually if it only takes a few minutes of their time. the bike garage is also a good place to go if you need a tool to repair your bike yourself, and the people in there will show you how to use it if you ask nicely.

buying a bike however, definitely get one elsewhere like Target.
downtown bike shops are just as expensive as the bike barn really.
if you want to rent a bike tho, the bike barn i think is the most convenient and the cheapest.

Ah, cool. Thanks for the recommendations. Whatever bike I get, I am looking forward to riding around campus. :D

Do any of you like renting vs. purchasing a bike? I was wavering this option as well.

Renting might be an issue because eventually you will crash, someone will crash into you, or someone will scratch your bike while parking next to you.

^ lol…good advice! I definitely will be buying at bike.

OLD BIKE @DAVIS POST!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-davis/915126-whats-your-bike.html

I’m leaning towards a Trek Gritty or a BMX We the people Justice…

ew ugh, do NOT get a mountain bike. davis is completely flat and absolutely perfect for road bikes. i suggest getting an old, good road bike, maybe off craigslist or something. i ride a road bike and i pass people regularly, and tire out less easily. seats on mountain bikes and cruisers are so low your leg doesn’t even fully extend, and you lose kinetic energy from the fat tires. unless you’re planning on riding on grass instead of the multiple miles of bike path in Davis, get a road bike.

^ my sister’s boss, a davis alum, recommended i also get a used bike. road bikes, eh? i was kinda hesitant about a mountain bike seeing that davis is quite flat.lol

also, thanks @helpmepleasee! =)

get a kryptonite lock

it does not matter how crappy or awesome your bike is, it has the possibility of getting stolen
