Do people use them? Would it be a good idea to bring one or would it just be in the way?

Funny, I just was wondering the same thing today! :)

Only if you get housing in Dower or get housing in East Campus and do sports. I had a bike on/off, but for any walk under 10 minutes, the time spent locking and fetching a bike negates the travel speed. Also, the sidewalks, road width and hills are not bike friendly. I don’t recommend a bike.

My daughter and I visited Wellesley today and saw bikes everywhere, and most were left unlocked. She loves to bike and will bring her bike if she goes to Wellesley. We forgot to ask about possible bike storage during the winter. We did notice a bike repair shop about a half mile from campus.

I was wondering this as well :]
Do they rent bikes on campus? I know they do this at some schools like Davidson.

As of right now we do not rent bikes on campus. There is a guy, Wally, who comes by campus every so often and sells bikes pretty cheaply, or you can just get a bike at a sporting goods store or some graduating students are probably open to selling their bikes also. You can store your bike over winter; most residence hall complexes have covered areas where you can put them. And you can also store them over the summer.

" And you can also store them over the summer."

Not unless you box it into regular storage or have a friend on campus. Campus Po comes by once in the summer and removes abandoned bikes. Sometime in the summer there is a notice on Community that asks people to either vacate a particular bike by a a certain day or put a notice on the seat that the bike is not abandoned.

Yes, I was referring to putting it in a box during the summer with a storage label, but I know I wasn’t really clear on that.

Haha, okay, thanks. I guess I’ll wait and see which dorm I end up in.

Yup, housing assignments usually come out in late June/ early July!! ;)

I lived on East Campus and had to walk to the athletic center every day for swim team, but I was always fine without a bike. During the winter it gets icy so it’s a little dangerous to bike, anyway. I always thought that having a bike would be nice, but it’s so inconvenient to have to store it. Plus I get around fine by walking, so it’s really a matter of preference.

yeah, it seems walking is the more convenient route. Is there a drugstore on campus/ in walking distance?

Yes, there is a cvs in the ville… actually there are two within walking distance from campus. The bookstore also sells tylenol, advil, etc.

I suggested east campus and the sports center because it’s one of the few walks where the time spent locking up your bike plus riding isn’t longer than just walking. I’ll toss out visits to Olin, or babysitting jobs as another excuse for a bike. It’s also one of the few places with decent covered bike storage. As with all “long” walks, the more you take the walk, the shorter it seems.

Of course whether biking is more efficient depends on what kind of lock you have (padlocked combo locks=annoying), and how clumsy you are with a bike rack. I found that I could ride my bike from Tower court to the science center quite quickly, but it was about equal in time to people who just stepped out their door since it took about a minute and a half to unlock my bike. I don’t recommend leaving a bike unlocked. Bikes tend to wander around campus to the annoyance of everyone who reads Community. You don’t need a “real” bike lock at Wellesley, since most bike thieves are students with no sense, not people with lock clippers who leave the broken bike locks on the ground, or the front wheel attached to the rack. I’ve never heard of a lock being cut at Wellesley. I saw two broken locks today when locking up my bike in Cambridge where I live now.

I bike more in Cambridge than I ever did at Wellesley. First of all, there are places to go on my bike. Second, despite the fact that I bike in traffic, a lot of Cambridge has been (re)designed with bikes in mind. Third, I bought a better bike.

As for the ‘Ski Market’ up the street from the college, those folks are really passionate about biking, and seem to know their stuff. The bikes don’t come cheap, but that’s because their decent bikes. I paid over $300 for the one I bought there, and it was a “lower” end model.

I find a bike more useful to go off campus like into the Ville or just to be able to get farther of campus for a while. I really never use mine off campus because I live in the Quad and everything is pretty close, plus there are soooooo many hills!

I do definitely recommend a bike if you live on East Campus!
