Hey people, so my Dad offered to buy me a bike, but I'm kinda new to this thing so I don't know what to look for/what to get. I'm not looking for anything particularly fast or shiny, I just need something versatile that can get me around town on any kind of slope. My town has a lot of hills, so something that can go uphill nicely would be sweet. Any particular bikes or anything you guys wanna suggest?

Will you go offroad? How expensive are you looking for?

Since you sound new to this, you probably don’t want a road bike.

Hmmm, something low to medium when it comes to price, and I won’t be going on any mountain paths anytime soon. Just something that can get me from home to school (1-2 miles on a slight upward slope)

I would recommend a hybrid bike. At the lower range the difference between the manufacturers isn’t that big. You can save a lot of money by buying a used bike, if there is a shop nearby. If you mean 100-200 when you say low, this is way to do it.

I went to a bike shop today, and the guy showed me a Trek bike priced at $350 and it seemed nice when I tried it out. I wasn’t able to try out any big hills but I went on a slight upward slope and it was easy enough. But decent bikes can handle the steeper hills as long as they are on the lowest gear, right?

Yes, they can if you use a low gear. The only issue is balancing if you go up the hill slowly, but that doesn’t depend on what kind of bike you get.
