Do a lot of people ride bikes around campus?

What about bike riding during the winter, is it just more difficult or completely impossible?

Because I've heard the bus system is horrible during winter and I'd like to avoid it as much as possible.

What kind of bike would you recommend?

There are a whole bunch of people who bike on campus. I never really had a problem riding my bike in the winter, but we had a very mild winter last year and I’m not from MI, so I’m not too sure what a true MI winter is like. I hate buses because I get very sick as soon as I get on one, so I can’t tell you too much about them, other than they’re pretty reliable.

bikes are everywhere on campus. Biking during the winter is difficult but not impossible (often times the sidewalks are pretty clear even in the winter). The bus isn’t that bad, but I never liked relying upon them (I’d rather walk). I don’t know anything about bikes…any kind that doesn’t break down is suitable really…

Do not take an expensive bike. Also, some people have their seats stolen off the bikes so try to find a way to lock the seat on.

I only biked when it was warm, but at least two of the people on my floor regularly biked in the winter. Just be careful not to slip!

I bought a $60 bike and it served me well. I made sure to get one that required a hex key to adjust/remove the seat, so it was less likely to be stolen. Make sure you lock both the frame and the front tire to the bike rack when you park your bike.

The buses are reliable enough in the winter. Occasionally the bus will be full, so the driver will skip a stop, but most of the time it’s not a huge issue. If there’s a large crowd waiting for the bus in the winter, try to get as close to the bus stop as you can (in front of everyone else) as soon as you see it coming. I feel that getting a bus pass during the winter months is a good investment.
