Anyone have any general tips to biking at UT austin?

Also some questions I have.

What is the best way to cross Guadalupe street from west campus? I see some people just waiting until the pedestrian crossing signal goes on, and some people that actually follow the traffic?

What is the best lock to buy?

Any other tips?

Bikes are to be like vehicles. I would move with the traffic, not the pedestrians.

The UT police recommends a u-shaped lock with a cable to go to the other wheel:

Use a two-lock locking system when securing your bicycle on campus
Austin has one of the highest bicycle theft rates in the world. Two locks take twice the time, tools and manpower for a potential thief to defeat. The primary lock should be a U-shaped lock that uses a flat key, and the secondary lock a self-locking cable.

The campus is huge-absolutely humongous! Depending on where your dorm and classes are, you may want to bring a bike-most students do. Many also walk from class to class, but if you are at one place in campus and your friends want to hang on the other side of campus, it may take half an hour to get there!

If you live on campus, the best way to get around is walking or using the bus. A bike is useful to get from a place off of campus to campus, but there are so many people walking that you are unable to move very quickly on the bike. Lost of people bring a bike and end up not using it.
