Biking?

Is UCSD a bike-friendly school? And/or do a lot of people bike?

Not a lot, but people do bike! They usually end up getting in people’s ways and hitting other pedestrians. Long boarding/skating is much more popular at UCSD.

Bikes are very useful, especially when you have classes back-to-back that are across campus. You can’t get from some lecture halls to others in 10 minutes especially with so much traffic. If you are somewhat intelligent, you should have no problem avoiding collisions…

Are bikes required to be registered?

Its not required but certainly highly recommended! I registered mine last year, and it was a very good thing that I did.

I read that UCSD has a Pedal Club.
You register and you get some perks with it.

@hopefullyokay - Why was registering a very good thing for you?

if you get serious enough: [UCSD Cycling | Collegiate Cycling](http://www.ucsdcycling.org/)

(one of the few things i regret not doing during my time in san diego)

I’m with SDlover… what does registering your bike do?

I’m not sure what registering “does”, but a guy in my suite apparently got a ticket or something for not having his bike registered.

I don’t have a bike but yeah, it is really helpful around here with such a big campus!

If u get it stolen, having registering it would help the police a great deal in looking for it.
at least thats why they told me to register it…

I bought a bike when I got here and I’m glad I did. It’s not the greatest, mainly because you have to weave through people sometimes, but it’s easily the fastest way to get around.

So then it’s safe to say that I should bring my bike next year?

^Yes 10char

I shall tell you my bike story, hopefully it will help you on this decision:

Last year, someone stole my bike. Luckily it was registered, so I had the serial # on file, and all that good stuff. However, the police station obviously has more pressing things to worry about so they didn’t do much else after taking my report.

A few weeks later, I was walking to Cafe V for some reason, and I came across a bike attached to a railing (not locked, mind you) and thought…that looks like mine! Lo and behold, that was my bike, with sparkly stickers and all. It was only missing the squishy seat cover I bought for it. I called the police station, and after about a 1/2 hour of standing in cold wind, someone came by to confirm that it was my bike, and since I had a record of my registration and a police report, all the cop needed was confirm the serial number, and I got it back! Yay!

The moral of the story: register your bike. :)

What’s the best lock to use to prevent my bike from getting stolen?

Aren’t U-locks as good?

The police officers I talked to (see my last post) recommend U locks.
