Billing question

Are room/board invoices generated twice a year at the same time as the tuition invoices? I can't seem to find an answer on IU's website so would appreciate help from the IU experts here. Thanks!

Yes. It’s hard to find it on the bursar’s site, but it is there. I also emailed the bursar’s office before I found it on the site. The office also confirmed this.

So two big bills twice a year (due Aug. 10th and Dec. 10th) sounds like what we should plan for. Thanks for the help rrah.

I think the room/board is billed in four monthly payments. I checked my son’s account activity for 2008-2009 and for Fall 2008 he got the big tuition and 1/4 room/board bill in July; then 1/4 room/board in mid-August; then 1/4 room/board bill in mid-September; the last 1/4 room/board bill came in mid-October. Then in mid-November the Spring semester tuition and 1/4 room/board bill came; then 1/4 room/board bill the middle of December, January, and February. I think the billing starts in mid-September for incoming freshmen who register late in the orientation period. So it is a little better than paying two big bills all at once.

Yes, the tuition bill comes early, then the dorms and meals are billed in increments. If you choose to pay the tuition bill over a three month period, they charge an additional $30 to put off 1/2 of the tuition payment for a month, and then $15 to put off an additional 1/2 (1/4th of the total tuition) payment for an additional month. I don’t believe they allow you to put off the dorm and meal charges to any great extent.

One further word of advice since I recall you are not attending orientation. IU will NOT send you a paper bill. It’s all done via email. Be sure you and your student go into the bursar’s website and sign up for QuikPay. This will allow you to access the bills.

This was the email response I received from the Bursar’s office regarding dorm/meal plan fees.

“The RPS billing for housing and dining will be billed per semester. The fall charges should be on the bill that is due 8/10 and the spring on the bill due 12/10.”

I seem to recall hearing the Bursar indicating that there were some changes this year regarding RPS.

Thanks for the heads up on QuikPay. I read through the Bursar’s site in some detail since I knew the financial information was something I would miss at orientation. I’m sure in 9 months this will all seem far more clear, but in the meantime I appreciate the help I’m getting here. I’ll wait to see how the bills flow in over the next few months.

This year the fall bill will be delayed a month and will be due Sept 10. If you are dividing the payments they will be divided in thirds this time only.
From info at this week’s orientation - change is because of the delay in confirmation of state funding that will allow them to set the tuition.
