billing stuff!

um, i just got an email that i gotta pay 10,000 by august 20th... and my minimum payment is 10,000 it says... someone give me some good news?

I have the same question - aren’t we allowed to divide them into monthly installments, and how do we go about this?

Yep, you have to pay that amount by the 20th, either all up front or through a 5 payment method (if I recall correctly). There’s an option to do that in OASIS > under the “USC ePay” link.

How come on my statement, I was still charged $150 for the orientation fee? I already paid the $150 upon signing up for orientation 3 weeks ago. Also, I had my student health insurance fee waived yesterday at orientation because my current insurance has a similar coverage. Is there still any chance that my statement will change come Monday?

Looks like there will be at least some changes before school starts.

"Within the next few days you will receive an e-mail notification from the USC Cashier’s Office regarding your fall 2010 tuition and fee assessments. You may notice that some of your financial aid and/or loans are not yet credited to your account. These credits will appear starting Monday, August 16, 2010, for students who meet all disbursement requirements.

Refunds of fall financial aid will be available beginning Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Please visit [SFS - Student Account Direct Deposit Refunds](http://www.usc.edu/sfs/directdeposit) to sign up for direct deposit of refunds to your bank account."

The bills must have come out this weekend!

First, take a deep breath. It (probably) isn’t as bad as it first appears. As Serapher points out, all charges and credits are not on there yet.

1) The balance due. For those of you on financial aid, your loans have not yet been applied, and they won’t be until about August 16th or so – the Federal government won’t let USC credit your account until 10 days before classes start. Outside scholarships only credit when the check actually arrives at USC, so be sure you have done everything you need to do to get those sent to USC.

2) Loans. If you haven’t done your Stafford loan request or your Master Promissory Note, now is the time. Go to your financial aid forms page and get a Stafford loan request. Submit it.

3) Payment plan. If you would like to use the payment plan, you have to sign up for it. Go to Oasis and choose “USC Payment Plan,” the second item in the right hand column, and sign up. The charges on this first bill will be adjusted before August 20th if you get going on it NOW.

4) Orientation fee of $150. This is not for summer orientation. It is for welcome week activities and new students cannot avoid paying it (believe me, I tried to get it waived for my kid).

5) Health Center Fee of $236. Another one you can’t waive. This is NOT the student health insurance – which CAN be waived – this is for the on-campus health center that all students can use, even if they are not using USC health insurance. (Another one I tried to get waived… and failed)

6) Due date. August 20th is the due date for this statement, so you have almost a month to get all the above in order. Take a deep breath and get to work!

So instead of settling my bill soon, should I just wait for August 16 until all the adjustments have been made already (like my Student Health Insurance - I had it waived but it’s still appearing on my statement)? Because I tried enrolling for the payment plan and it’s asking me for a specific amount to divide by 5 already. Currently, I don’t know what the exact amount to put in yet since my funds/loans have not been disbursed yet.

There is no need to settle your account before the 16th - it isn’t due until the 20th.

For the payment plan, though I don’t know if they need a few weeks to get that set up - I would not want to wait until the last minute and find the whole amount is due on the 20th. There have been several questions about what amount to specify, and I am afraid I am no help because we have not used the payment plan - I was not even aware you had to come up with an amount. There should be no problem waiting at least until Monday or Tuesday to set up the payment plan, so I am hoping one or more of you call USC on Monday for some guidance on choosing an amount. Then come back and post to let everyone know.

Stafford loans will not be disbursed until 10 days before school begins. Is that correct?

Yes, that is the earliest Federal and state funds will credit to your account. The first day is August 23rd this year, so some students may start getting credits as early as the 13th or 14th.

Re: Post #8

Another USC mom sent me some info that she has been working with the payment plan. The enrollment seems to be instant, and the first payment is due when you enroll.

So it does not seem there is any problem with waiting until August 13th - 17th to sign up for the payment plan.

That’s what it looks like, anyway. Here are the key sections from the rather lengthy payment plan page:

Applications:

And finally:

And two more important payment plan page nuggets:

Last year we used the payment plan option for my son. If you go to the financial aid web page and select new (or continuing student as the case may be), look at your award online. There is also a link to a buget page. This page shows the cost of attendance and all your awards. Then it shows the EFC amount. You can choose on that page or the next how many payments 5 or 10. It calculates what your monthly payment should be. That is the amount I used last year for my son when signing up. He declined work/study. If you have work study, take that into consideration (take work/study amount divide by 5 or 10 and add to the monthly amount).

I have a quick question! As an international my only option for payment is through a wire transfer, but I’m not sure how I can get a wire transfer done before the 20th if my orientation/registration of classes is on the 16th (and thus when tuition is posted, correct?)?

I feel like there’s some piece of information I’m missing or internationals are treated differently. Anyone have any experience dealing with this type of thing?

regarding msheft’s suggestion of looking on the financial aid web page to see your fees, the cost of attendance given there was an early estimate. It did not take into account your choice of dorm, meal plan, etc. While the financial aid page may be a good place to see your EFC and FA awards, it’s more accurate to look at the actual COA charges on your epay statement page, and add anything that’s still missing (for example, parking permit, football ticket charges, meal plan upgrades, etc.)

How do you waive the USC health insurance?

Info and a link to the waiver form in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/943334-who-will-apply-applied-health-insurance-plan-waiver.html?highlight=waive+health+insurance

I have a question,
is it better to start signing up for the monthly payment plan AFTER all the loans/FA are credited? (after August 16th right?) Because I still don’t know the exact amount that I have to pay, though the statement says $6096 is due on the 20th.

by the way, on the Title IV Funds Authorization form, which I have just sent 20 minutes ago, it says that Title IV funds include Pell, SEOG, PLUS, FFELP, Perkins, Stafford loans and work-study.

So for me, I received $5500 (Federal Pell Grant), $5500 Stafford and $1100 (SEOG). All these aid are NOT credited yet, right? so after all these aid are credited, they are going to bill me ($6096 x 2) (the whole year) - ($5500 + 5500 +1100)?

Ok I don’t understand mine at all. It says I owe 32,000 and some change, I had a credit of 10,888 and now I owe 21,000 something. Who do I call about my tuition charges? Cashier’s office? I thought tuition was 18 something?
