Bing sounds so much better than stony. It seems here people like it more and theres something for everyone but at stony its either you love it or hate it. I'm just wondering which has a better reputation? And does Binghamton have a good computer science department? That was one of the reasons I was going to Stony (strong science reputation). Add in anything you think i should know about bing student life etc

Thanks for the help ^_^
P.S One thing that made me wonder was the fact stony gets ranked in princeton review near the top in some very bad categories, such as least happy students. O.o

For comp sci, either school is a very good choice. However, graduate strength is better at Stony if it matters.

The complaints about Stony Brook? Yeah, you can find them anywhere online, but it seems to be improving quite a bit. My friends at Bing are having a good time with the usual complaints about the town (ghost town and all) and having nothing to do, but the reality is that there is always something to do.

Anyway, reputation wise- you can’t go wrong with either. Social life- Bing has the advantage.

The biggest (and fair) complaint about SB is that it’s pretty far out in the Island and as a result it’s mostly LI kids commuting (or if not commuting, fleeing as fast as possible on weekends).

Otherwise, I’d say it’s the best basic sciences school in the system (Buff is better for engineering though).

When people make the generalization that Stony Brook has a “strong science reputation,” they’re probably confusing reputation with the number of pre-meds enrolled at the institution.

Binghamton is the better choice for you, and it appears you’ve already decided for yourself: “Bing sounds so much better than stony.” Go with your gut.

As someone who did research at Stonybrook as a high school student and have spent a lot of time out there, I’d say that we’re not confusing pre-med for science at all.
