Bing vs Stony

BINGHAMTON vs STONY BROOK

For anything to do with science, go with Stonybrook. However, Bing has been tradionally a stronger liberal arts school.

Im a freshmen at Binghamton.. if you have any questions shoot me a message or reply back.

is stonybrook really better for all science and all math classes...im applying to both but binghamton is def harder to get into which adds prestige to some extent. Binghamton is also a nicer campus (im pretty sure) I;ll probably major in science but all things considered which is better

Stonybrook has a hospital on campus and Binghamton does not.. and they also probably have more science geared research than binghamton does. However the student body is probably better at Bing and its more prestiguous. Every SUNY has flaws, just decide which you would rather have.

both my parents went undergrad and grad to SUNY Stony Brook. My mom is now a partner in a firm who has Stony Brook's hospital as a client. In terms of the college experience, Bing is probably better. Its also better known nationally. Stony Brook however, has several resources available to science majors that would be hard to pass, one of the greatest of which is their affiliation with several internationally respected research institutes including Brookhaven and Cold Spring Harbor. If you want to study science, Stony Brook is very strong

Stony Brook is the better science college, however their reputation is more at the graduate school level. SB is more of a commuter school. Check out The Princeton Review Rankings and you will get a glimspe of problems with both schools. For example; students opinions of academics, professors, TAs, dorms, campus, etc.....

Binghamton has a good science dept; however it is not research oriented as SB.

If you want more a college experience choose Binghamton for undergrad. It is the best NYS has to offer. Have you considered Cornell's state school programs. I know several who attended and went on to med school.

yeah..overall binghamton is better and its location is so much nicer than stony. I would never go to stonybrook because its like 45 mins from my house. Stonybrook is still very good for pre med and science but binghamton is up there(keep in mind that bing is a relatively new school and hasnt gained as much recognition as it truly deserves YET)...

For undergraduate studies, Binghamton is not the best that NYS has to offer. Geneseo is definitely the best NYS has to offer for undergraduates. It's significantly smaller(only around 5000 students). It's students have higher average SAT scores than Binghamton or Stony Brook. Princeton Review rates Geneseo's academics as being significantly better than Bing or SB. Also, both Bing and SB have multiple negative listings in the Best 357 rankings while Geneseo has no negative listings.

Uh.... i hate the bing vs. geneseo debates always initiated by geneseo people...geneseo is a super school but c'mon its not even comparable. You can't compare a liberal arts college vs. a major university. That is why the debate of stony vs. binghamton is reasonable. Also it is much much easier to appear more selective when your student body is half the size of the other one mentioned. The fact is geneseo accepts 49 percent to bing's 42 percent now, with sat's averages only being i think 15 points higher in geneseo's favor once again with only 5,000 ug's to bing's 10,500. That withstanding I think Geneseo still is a good school... but please no more comparisons. Binghamton is the best university and Geneseo is the best college.

andrewv11-

I agree. The comparisons are silly, Geneseo is a college and a good one, but the big time, nationally recognized schools are the major university centers, the best of which are Bing and SB. Unless you don't like big schools in which case id say Geneseo, but if thats not the case, the other two have more to offer

i agree....and binghamton isnt called the "ivy of the sunys" for no reason....thats pretty impressive to me...i never heard that about geneseo...and the SAT scores are only due to size of course

if u get in both, goto binghamton, the students are better, instruction is better. i have friends going to both stony and binghamton, stony brook goers are mostly binghamton rejects. binghamton actually has a campus and people actually dorm there. But, i think in terms of international reputation, stony brook is more renowned than binghamton. GOTO Binghamton, it is just plain better.

Binghamton = the UCLA of New York. I have friends who go there who couldn't be happier.

How could Binghamton be compared to UCLA? In terms of peer assessment, US News, Princeton Review, etc... Binghamton is not even in the ballpark. I still believe it is underrrated but it is not even a top 25 public u.
UCLA/ Penn State, Maryland and mother higher rated state schools are more highly regarded than the "IVY of the SUNY system".

did he say anything about binghamton being UCLA material? is psu and maryland in newyork?

Obviously not, but to even compare UCLA, PSU, U of MD to Binghamton...
be serious.
When individuals attempt to equate SUNYs to top state universities nationwide, they are kidding themselves.
Binghamton is a good school if you want a low cost education. Otherwise, it is a mediocre state university. Period!!!!!!
Look at the rankings, Princeton Review, US New, etc...

im gonna try to rate the top 5 SUNYS..im not sure how accurate it is...please comment and share your ideas..thanks

1.Binghamton
2.Stony Brook
3.Geneseo?
4.Buffalo
5.Albany

I'm a she, by the way.

Im going to Binghamton in the fall (transfer from Trinity college in CT) but i live on long island. From what ive heard from people (non-science majors, the lot of them) Stony brook is very impersonal and there is no sense of community while the opposite is true at binghamton.
