Binge Drinking at Virginia Tech

For those who are unaware, binge drinking remains a very serious problem at Virginia Tech... a problem that both the town as well as Tech administration pretty much chooses to ignore, as it brings a lot of money into Blacksburg. I'd think long and hard before I "sponsored" an apartment for my child in one of the New River Valley apartment council complexes (which are primarily animal house environments. NRVAC members ESPECIALLY don't want the issue addressed).

They believe that the whole reason for the students to rent in the first place, is to get out from "under the thumb" of Virginia Tech administration and be able to "unwind" through wild parties.

The situation has to be witnessed to be believed.... I know a PI who has images of just how bad the situation has become. Unfortunately college confidential doesn't want links to these images posted on their message bases out of legal concerns. The binge drinking problem won't iimprove until Tech parents themselves start putting pressure on the town and VT to address the situation.

How does it compete, I mean compare with UVa? It’s college–most places kids drink and party. This is as shocking and newsworthy as gambling in Casablanca.

Binge drinking happens pretty much every single day at every single college around the country (with a few exceptions). Nothing is going to change it-it is a rite of passage, tradition, a new experience, whatever. College is college-to some people it means hard work and studying, to others it means partying, and to many, many people it means both.

Uhh, read the report which is linked to. V Tech drinking blows the pants off of UVA.

You’d have to see & experience the “rite of passage” in Blacksburg to believe it.

I find that old song and dance about drinking just being a part of college really exasperating. It’s responsible for a lot of misery.

I think “drinking,” while perhaps a college experience, is surely different than the power drinking or pregaming that a lot of students might think is their rite of passage. It is not a rite of passage to suffer alcohol poisoning. I am actually in favor of perhaps lowering the drinkng age so kids might learn to drink responsibly instead of making it some sort of clandestine exercise. Studies show that it is a small percentage who drink the most. So while “everyone” thinks “everyone” else is doing it, they aren’t really looking at the majority. Instead of pushing the problem off campus where there is no supervision (and no liability either apparently), there should be more of an effort to educate instead of convincing them to refrain from doing it at all.

I read it and there is nothing directly comparing to UVa. Don’t make me dig up the Foxfield photos. Why is UVa known as the Wahoos?

OK OK I read this same post a few weeks back. At it again eh? Or a new OP? Or same OP with different name?

All the same poster. It’s getting old. ■■■■■? Ax to grind?

This person is obsessed with VTech. Frankly I find him a little bit scary. He even had a private detective take pictures of students partying. I am worried about his obsession and what he might do about it. I have a daughter at Tech.

I was walking around behind the corner at UVA the other day and there were entire blocks that were covered in solo cups.

Oh please… be a little more rational then that. Id be concerned about your daughter driving around Blacksburg weekend evenings due to the number of intoxicated students floating around. As for the PI, I’m not the only one concerned about the problem in Blacksburg. If you think I’m just a kook, place a call to MADD (mothers against drunk driving) and ask them what they think in regards to whats happening in Blacksburg, and the lack of cooperation they’ve recieved from the town and the university.

I think binge drinking is a concern everywhere. A year or two ago there was a tragic death at William and Mary - if I remember correctly, a student had been drinking and fell off the roof at around 3am.

At many colleges, students celebrate their 21st birthday by taking 21 shots of liquor, which has led to fatal alcohol overdoses.
