binghamton, geneseo, university of michigan

-resident of ny so geneseo and bing are relatively cheap
-Not going to get any considerable amount of financial aid
-planning to go to grad school
-planning to major in pre-vet or chemistry or business (not sure yet)

got into all schools as undecided major

U Mich is the best school on that list. However, I do not think it is better enough for how much extra it will cost you.
Geneseo is more comperative, and better, than Binghamton in many ways. Heres a little SUNY comparison I did in another post.

Geneseo Princeton Review Admissions Selectivity Rating: 93
Binghamton Princeton Review Admissions Selectivity Rating: 92
Stony Brook Princeton Review Admissions Selectivity Rating: 89

Geneseo average SAT : 1252
Binghamton average SAT: 1250
Stony Brook average SAT: Not Reported

Geneseo average ACT: 27
Binghamton average ACT: 26
Stony Brook average ACT: Not Reported

Geneseo average High school GPA: 3.7
Binghamton average High school GPA: 3.6
Stony Brook average Highschool GPA: 3.6

Geneseo Students in top 10% of HS class: 50%
Binghamton Students in top 10% of HS class: 40%
Stony Brook Students in top 10% of HS class: 33%

Geneseo Princeton Review Academic Rating: 78
Binghamton Princeton Review Academic Rating: 75
Stony Brook Princeton Review Academic Rating: 73

Genseo Princeton Review quality of life rating: 72
Binghamton Princeton Review quality of life rating: 62
Stony Brook Princeton Review quality of life rating: 62

To total it all up…
Categories “won” by Geneseo: 7
Categories “won” by Binghamton: 0
Categories “won” by Stony Brook: 0

If you want to major in bussiness, note Geneseo sends 19% of its students to bussiness school compared to Binghamton's 3%.

HOWEVER, if you want to do pre-vet, Binghamton sends 9% of its students to med school, compared to Geneseo's 3%.

So if your leaning towards Pre-Vet I would go to Bing, otherwise, go to Geneseo.

Michigan is worth it.

Bing is " SUNY Harvard", right? :-/

Geneseo owns Bing. Thats just the bottom line. Geneseo used to be private, but now its state, so its almost like going to a private school for 5 thousand dollars a year (Geneseo costs less than Bing)

Binghamton has better facilities and professors.

I also think U Michigan is worth the extra cost, but it depends on your family's financial situation. They could take out Parent PLUS loans to cover the difference.

i'd go to UMich. The SUNY system isn't very strong and the extra investment is worth it.

in comparison to the rest of the SUNY schools:

bing = harvard or yale
geneseo = amhers or williams

im going to guess that i3basketballboy is a geneseo student??

im deciding between binghamton and michigan and i feel geneseo isnt even in the same league. binghamton at least gets respect in the New York area. geneseo has been a good school for only a short amount of time.

SUNY only has a decent reputation within the state of New York, and only just barely there.
Michigan. Slam dunk, no contest.

^ You must not read much:
BING:

  • #1 in 2010 as a best value among the nation’s public colleges for out-of-state students and #5 overall - Kiplinger’s Personal Finance
  • #6 best value for public universities based on academics, cost of attendance and financial aid - “The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2010”
  • Binghamton University’s School of Management’s accounting program is ranked #2 in the nation by BusinessWeek.
  • Binghamton University’s School of Management is ranked 12th best public business school in the nation by BusinessWeek, and 35th overall when including private schools (March 15, 2010).
    GENESEO:
  • In 2008 Kiplinger’s Personal Finance listed the college as the number one “Best Value Public College” in the nation for out-of-state students, and number six in the nation for in-state residents. Geneseo has been distinguished in Kiglinger’s Top Ten “Best Value Public Colleges,” both in and out-of-state since 2005. US News & World Report’s 2005 edition of Guide to America’s Best Colleges: Geneseo is ranked No. 12 in the category “Best Universities-Master’s” for all colleges, public or private, in the northern region. Geneseo is also ranked No. 2 among the top public universities in the north. Geneseo was listed in the 2005 “Fiske Guide to Colleges,” a guide published annually by former New York Times Education Editor Edward B. Fiske. In the Fiske guide, Geneseo is highlighted as a “Best Buy” school, and is lauded for its academic programs, accessible professors and hometown atmosphere. The Princeton Review profiled Geneseo in the 2005 edition of “The Princeton Review’s Guide to the Best 357 Colleges,” and the college was ranked No. 3 on that publication’s list of “Best Bargains – Public” among all public colleges and universities nationwide.

While UMich is more widely known, primarily for football, the SUNYs offer good schools known in the business world for a good price. UMich is not worth it for OOS rates.

Michigan is the best decision you’ll make in your entire life.

“While UMich is more widely known, primarily for football, the SUNYs offer good schools known in the business world for a good price. UMich is not worth it for OOS rates.”

About 1/3 of the students there would disagree with you. Michigan is known very well internationally, and it has little to do with football. Michigan was a great university even before football was started.

I am from NY, got into all of those SUNY & CUNY but I choose UMich.

U. Michigan

giogio11, I see you’re looking to go into business.
You should look at this; Binghamton is probably a better investment.

http://bwnt.businessweek.com/bschools/undergraduate/return_on_investment_2010/public_schools.asp</a>
55k a year median starting salary at Binghamton vs. 59k for Ross.
Price for SUNY is like 10x less than price for Michigan.

RJK, what data do you have that goes back to before 1879?

The fact remains the if the OP is full pay, it will cost >$200K for UMich and about 1/2 that for one of the SUNYs. Not worth the difference in cost.

^^^I’m not the one who stated that Michigan was most famous because of football.

Go to Binghamton or Geneseo. If you choose Michigan it would only be because you are a prestige whore (like 70% of posters on here). Ask yourself if that Michigan degree will really take you further than Binghamton or Geneseo, both great schools. In the end it comes down to you. If you work hard and get good grades, you can make it to vet school from Binghamton or Geneseo. Your college only has to do with 25% of your success. And you will succeed the most when you’re happy. So, I’d say go with a SUNY, and pick the one you’re most comforable at.

I would pick Binghamton or Geneseo. With grad school in your future, save the money on your undergrad.

You’ll get a very good education at both Binghamton and Geneseo. Have you visited the two campuses?
