Hey, Ive been stressing over this decision for quite sometime now and a final decision has to be made within the next two days. Im currently sooo confused as to which school to pick.. At the moment I want to major in engineering (most likely mechanical).. Buffalo offered me $3,000 a year and an opportunity to be in the honors college... They also have a better engineering program that is ranked 52... But its so far from where I live on Long Island and the weather is terribly cold (lots of wind).. Binghamton initially wait listed me but then accepted me, which was very exciting.. Binghamton is a better school overall and is ranked at 86... Buffalo is ranked at 120.. But Binghamton is supposedly ranked at 120 for engineering.. Binghamton seemed to be my dream school the whole time but now I cant decide because i love them both.. I love the fact that the weather is somewhat nicer and the school is a lot closer.. Binghamton would be more expensive than Buffalo but is in much more of a convenient location and has a better academic reputation from what Ive heard.. But I truly cant decide.. And I know girlfriends shouldn't have an influence but im really close with mine and the college that is farther is even less tempting because of that reason.. I would really love any advice that your willing to give me as to which college to attend..Thanks!

Im also interested in social life and parties… I mean both of course are known for them but does either one bypass the other significantly?

Just my opinion, but all that really matters is your schools reputation, and Bing has a much better reputation, therefore, go to Binghamton.

First of all, don’t trust US World Rankings. Theyre crap. Look at the individual rankings for individual programs. Buffalo is ranked higher in Buisiness, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and social sciences than any other SUNY. Buffalo also gets great reputation for its architecture school, law school, dental school, pharmacy school, and medical school. I have no freaking clue why Bing gets better “reputation” than Buffalo, because Buffalo has a much higher endowment (450 mill) compared to bing which only has 72 mil. Buffalo also has a lot more research than Bing.

My parents went to UB and I’m attending it too. I got into Umass Amherst, Stony Brook, Buffalo, UAlbany, and Binghamton and others, but Buffalo was the right choice for me. Keep in mind, I got scholarships from Umass and Albany but not Buffalo.

Don’t look at US world rankings. They really are bull and the colleges literally pay their way in to get higher rankings. Sure, Bing may be a little bit more selective, but that’s because it’s a much smaller school. Buffalo is still selective, and everyone who I talk to thinks it’s a prestigious school. Keep in mind, I live in an area where Harvard grads and MIT grads are abundant (I live in Boston).

ps…my father is an engineer and graduated from Buffalo. he’s no earning over 400K and he hires many UB alumni because he knows they are good. He said that he doesnt have any bing grads working at his corporation.
