Forget about in-state or out-of-state status. All things being considered equal what are the pros and cons of each? And where would you go?

Binghamton's cheaper both in state and out. But it's VERY cold and snowy. It also has a much better reputation. Also, while neither schools are considered small, Binghamton's signifigantly smaller than penn state.(I assume you meant university park btw)

Unless you can't stand the cold, Binghamton's a better decision.

binghamton has absolutely no life at all, no sports, and is in the middle of no where

Where are you getting this information from? It's got a great night life and is in a small city...

I love Bing but the there is no solid sport program and the frats are far away from campus. The Binghamton area is gorgeous though and there is a lot to do. It depends what you want out of it.

"Binghamton's cheaper both in state and out. But it's VERY cold and snowy. It also has a much better reputation."

Better reputation? You OBVIOUSLY live in New York, because Penn State University Park has a better reputation than Binghamton. Ok, I guess we will just have to go by National rankings.

-Penn State University Park #47 nationally and #15 public university in the country.

-Binghamton #77 nationally..not sure what # for public as I didn't feel like counting that high, but it is ranked below Marquette. I think that tells enough.

Binghamton is in a similar ballpark with Penn State University Park, but Penn State is a much better school and has a better reputation nationally(and this is coming from someone that does not live in PA or the surrounding states).

I can't speak on the atmosphere of the campus, as I have never been to Binghamton, but State College is known as one of the quintessential college towns. Also, you may not want to post in the Binghampton area, as this may cause you to get some pretty biased responses.

Actually, I've applied to both Binghamton and Penn State. While I do live in NY, I do know about both schools so, please, don't undermind me.

If you want to get into rankings, just look at Kiplinger's best values. Binghamton is #1 for out of state. Penn state is #29. Also, you were correct, Penn State is #15 in the country for public schools. However, Binghamton is #11. You might wanna check your facts before posting...

11?!?!? According to whom? Check your USNews. We are not going by Binghamton's rankings that they give themselves. You don't even crack the top 30 nationlly for public universities.

National Universities Rankings - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report

I hope that you are able to see my "facts" that you wanted. Notice Binghamton down at 77. Just start counting from #15 at Penn State on page two and then count until you get to Binghamton on page four. USNews is the ranking system that is most commonly used and respected in regards to college rankings, not Kiplinger.

1 for out of state? Seriously...I am not saying Penn State is number 1, but they are a lot closer than Binghamton. Binghamton is not better than Michigan, UNC, UCLA, UVA, etc.. for out of state, which is what you are implying. Sounds like you have been drinking a little too much of the Binghamton Kool-Aid they are serving up there.

I said #1 for best value according to Kiplinger. Also, the second ranking was according to Forbes.

Calmmmmmmmmm down, sparky.

This is not a phish concert. You can't go off rattling rankings without factual support and expect everyone to be so stoned that they don't contest what you're saying. Trust me, it would take more than you to get a rise out of me. I just wanted to set you straight.

lol at your attempt to make it personal using my cc name. I gave you factual support. Kiplinger and Forbes are two highly respected rankings. Go look it up if you're so concerned.

if you can go to penn state, rather go there. much better reputation although a bit easier to get into-- probably because it has about triple the amount of kids than binghamton.

Phishfan,

USNews is the ranking that's recognized as the best and most accurate. Unbiased opinions would all support this, and you can feel free to take a look at where they put Binghamton in relation to Penn State University Park and the other publics. Just keep scrolling until you get to the mid 30s for publics for Binghamton.

Kiplinger is right, as Binghamton is the best deal for out of state, for that amount of money. Rankings, though, often take more into account than just price. As for Forbes' ranking, maybe you should take a look at the rankings, as the list is composed based upon the total cost of the education. Forbes is a FINANCIAL magazine. Penn State University Park is one of the more expensive universities for in and out of state , which is why they are not on the list and why all of the service academies, which are free, top the list. They cost nothing. Also, the Forbes magazine uses RateMyprofessor as %25 of its way to compose its ranking system....Another %25 comes from how many of a University's alumni are listed in Who's Who magazine....Seriously, the magazine's rankings are ridiculous. Feel free to take a read of one of many blogs and sites discrediting the Forbes ranking. Here's one by a college counselor, someone that would know colleges the best:

Forbes absurd new college ranking system : College Admissions Counseling

This is the reason that Forbes ranks schools like VMI and Binghamton above schools like Michigan and Washington (better schools). Take a breath buddy, I am just trying to make sure you have the information to sound like you know what you're talking about . In overall University rankings, Penn State University Park is the better choice.

Keep in mind how expensive each school is...
Binghamton is an AMAZING value if you're an in state student... so if finances are a BIG factor in your decision, I'd say go to Binghamton. Additionally, if Penn State seems too big, Binghamton sounds big, but doesn't feel it.

^Well, OP did say forget about IS and OOS so how can money be a factor? I think he's talking strictly on the atmosphere and programs of each university.

binghamton is much harder to get into- they accept 38 percent while penn state accepts over 50 percent. BIngamton also has a higher average gpa and sats in their freshman profile than does penn state. but im sure penn state ranks well, though i have never heard anyone speak highly of the school like i have of binghamton.

"binghamton is much harder to get into- they accept 38 percent while penn state accepts over 50 percent."

Is this a serious post? The University of Puerto Rico only accepts %16 of its applicants. I guess that makes them a great school too.

"BIngamton also has a higher average gpa and sats in their freshman profile than does penn state."

Average gpa for incoming class:
Penn State University Park: 3.6
Binghamton: 3.7

SAT range %25-75 percentile:
Penn State University Park: 1100-1300
Binghamton: 1190-1320

Yeah, the numbers make it look MUCH harder. Ha, the admissions are basically identical. I never said anything about difficulty of admissions. I simply said that the academics and resources of Penn State University Park are ranked as better than those of Binghamton. I think my saying "much better" was a stretch, as Binghamton is a very good school, but I still believe Penn State UP is better.

"but im sure penn state ranks well, though i have never heard anyone speak highly of the school like i have of binghamton."

It does rank well. It's actually ranked as one of the top 15 public universities in the country. You must not get out much.

I don't know who regards Binghamton higher than Penn State. I could tell you many more foreigners know Penn State better. . .
Penn State is ranked higher than Binghamton, I think Penn State is at around 14 for public universities and Binghamton is 34.
Binghamton might be harder to get into, but Penn State, from what i hear, has a better quality of learning. Penn State also gets a lot of research done as well.

At any rate, I wanted to go to Penn State, but as OOS, i couldn't afford it. Both are great schools but for someone who isn't sure what they want to do-- Penn State has much more opportunity than Binghamton. . . Its bigger and nicer too lol (visited both, my opinion)

OBVIOUSLY if money is a problem, Binghamton is certainly good BUT IF IT ISN'T-- EDUCATION WISE Penn State is better.
I don't understand the arguing, google does justice. (or visiting)

Also. . . Penn States acceptance is rougly FIVE times as much as Binghamtons . .. that probably contributes to the higher acceptance rate. . .
Bings undergrads 10k~ and Penns 45k~

I'm betting some of the people that "know" Penn State know of the football team.

DShap91, are you saying that it's not possible for someone to know both the athletics and academics of a school? While I am not going to agrue that football has not helped the building up the university, it has, the school also has very strong academics and resources. Joe Paterno and his football teams have definitely helped to shape the national image of the university, though. Our really good football helps to brings attention to all of the other great things that the university has to offer.
