take it ease guys we cant base a school solely off of USNWR

I wasn't saying anything negative about their academics I'm just saying that's a big factor in their name recognition

getting back to the question at hand here...it really depends on what the OP wants from the college...
bigger, sports-oriented, solid academics, pretty campus-penn state
smaller, cheaper, quickly rising academics, pretty surroundings-binghamton

dancingintherain, I think that's a very accurate way to put it in a nut shell.

It's not all about the overall ranking of the school. For example, a school can be well known for its sports program but that doesn't mean that its academics are great.

Binghamton is known for its School of Management; if you're interested in marketing, finance, accounting, etc., then perhaps Binghamton would be a better choice than Penn State. But let's say you're interested in English or writing, then maybe Penn State would be better because Binghamton's English department isn't so great. These are just examples, but do you understand what I mean?

Suppose you wanted to study engineering, and you were accepted into both Harvard and MIT. Both schools are ranked very high in the nation, but of course MIT would be the better option because it obviously has a better engineering department there. Get it now? There's no reason to be arguing over which school is better when they each have their pros and cons.

all about fit.....go visit; stay over, spend some time.....VERY diff schools.....see what's right for you........

"It's not all about the overall ranking of the school. For example, a school can be well known for its sports program but that doesn't mean that its academics are great."

Rhianna,
This post would make some semblance of sense if USNews decided to take football scores into account with academics. Unfortunately, they do not, so your post sounds ridiculous. Michigan does not get points taken away in the US News because it's football team had a terrible year.

Rhianna,
You apply to both because they are well ranked, but if you have a focus between the two the decision is easy. If you want to study engineering, you go to MIT because it is tech based and because MIT's engineering is #1 in the country. This situation is NOTHING LIKE THAT. The rankings are not identical in this situation, as they would be with MIT and Harvard, so you aren't just picking between two identical schools with different areas of focus. Do you understand what I mean? Unless you are sure you are going for a specific major, you should take into account the school with the better ranking and reputation into account. In this situation, Penn State UP is overall ranked better as providing better resources and is ranked as providing a better education. Get it now?

jec: again, i repeat, you have no idea how diff these schools are.....nothing to do with rankings.....more like apples & oranges......

Penn State is big enough so that anyone with over an 1100 can get in and it's only known because of its football team. People don't know anything beyond their football and there isn't much else that needs to be known about it. If you want a school that combines football name recognition with good academics try BC. But Penn State is extremely mediocre.

Bing is an extremely tough school to get into especially now, I've heard from admissions counselors that the acceptance rate will be down to 29% this year because of the economy. The real question is in 5 years will there even be any doubt that Bing is better? Nope.

BOOM shove that in your pipe and smoke it jec7483. Run back to your penn state forums.

When does size have anything to do with anything? Michigan has 36,000 people.

People may know Penn State commonly for football. I guess that is a difference from most people out of the northeast that have never even heard of Binghamton or "Bing".

Also, you can get into Binghamton with a score in the 1100s as well. It is not much harder, if at all, to get into "Bing", as you call it, as I posted the admissions standards above and they are basically identical. The academics once you get to Penn State UP are better, though.

Penn State University Park outranks your "Bing" in almost every ranking, so not sure what that says about your school if you call PSU mediocre.

Down to 29%, huh? WOW. University of Puerto Rico has a 16% acceptance rate. I guess that makes them great too.

You seem to have the reasoning power and logic power of someone from Staten Island, so your posts fits you just right. Face it, you should have gone to Syracuse and not some school nobody cares about.

Oh yeah, in five years Penn State UP will still be better. Just like the way it is this year.

hahhahahahaha.....now you're attacking Syracuse? what happened to the Bing rampage? go away...most people at Binghamton probably wouldn't have Penn State on their list.....12,000 v 35,000....not a valid comparison....the only thing they have in common is that they are both publics.....like i said earlier....go away........

Binghamton is like way better. Penn State is a weaker private university.

Ok. I went to a big SUNY (not Binghamton) but close. And I visited Bing since I had friends there. My s goes to PSU. So I have a basis for comparison.
If money was no object, I would go to PSU. But then, I really like school spirit and sports. Other may make a different choice.
Thing is...yes PSU is known for football. I didn't realize the impact this would have on the students until my s went there. These kids LOVE their school and come back to visit when they're old and gray and using walkers. The SUNY kids I knew never showed that kind of pride. It's a COMPLETELY different environment than SUNY.
Check out both and go where you like it more. There is no huge difference in academics. PSU is more well known but that shouldn't affect your choice. Go where it feels right.
Oh...and the weather...miserable in both places...sorry.

I'm a little surprised to read this. Rhianna, are you an English major at Binghamton? If not, is this a common feeling among Engish majors there? I'd appreciate anyone else's feedback on this, since my daughter has been very interested in Binghamton based, at least in part, on the reputed strength of its English program.

"hahhahahahaha.....now you're attacking Syracuse? what happened to the Bing rampage?"

No, I said you should should have gone to Syracuse instead. I was insinuating that Syracuse is better.

"Binghamton is like way better. Penn State is a weaker private university."

I am like totally like blown away by this post, dude. First, Penn State University Park is public....Second, I think they are both very strong schools academically. I just believe PSU to be the better choice.

"You seem to have the reasoning power and logic power of someone from Staten Island, so your posts fits you just right. Face it, you should have gone to Syracuse and not some school nobody cares about."

are you serious Jec? you're such a weirdo. You go on all of these different forums and fight for Penn state. Whether or not the things you say are true...let it go. You're actully getting personal and insulting people? get a life! You make enemies in every forum because you argue die hard for Penn State all of the time. Get a facebook and stop going on CC like its your job. The US news already spoke its peace...let it go. Its one thing to inform people of the "outstanding" school you believe Penn state to be. But you're actually arguing about it with people! I don't know if Penn State wasn't your top choice or whatever, but get over your insecurities and get over your need to fight for Penn State. Its weird and annoying. I will also no longer be responding to you because youre extremely annoying and need a life. But I will definitely be showing your rediculous posts to all of my friends at Binghamton and at PSU so we can laugh at what a TOOL YOU ARE!

bpmarissa, I only come into rooms where there are misperceptions about the school. It seems to be you who is a little weird, as every post you have made so far has been following me around in these threads and responding to me. You have followed me long enough. I at least know what matters to me. What do you stand for, except to just come on here and constantly disagree with what I say.

"You're actully getting personal and insulting people? get a life!"

I was just responding to what was sent my way. Maybe if you did not come in and try to Monday morning quarterback against me in these threads you would know what you're talking about.

Plus, what is the right way to respond to someone that comes on here and says, "Binghamton is like way better. Penn State is a weaker private university." I never said Penn State was outstanding, but I do argue in areas where people come to make broad generalizations in order to deal with their own insecurities about their schools. It normally follows the lines of, "rankings don't matter. It's what fits best for your that is most important. You should pass on Harvard to go to you local community college if that feels right" Excluding financial problems, that's just simply wrong. It normally just comes down to, you are picking a bad school over a good school and it is often for ridiculous reasons. This is not the case here, as they are both good, but it often is that way. It just seems like a "mean" thing to say because everyone wants to warm fuzzy each other on these threads and say that every person went to a great school and is smart in their own way. You can come and smother people with "you're making the right decision either way" comments, but I don't smother people in BS. In this situation, I felt like going to Penn State was a better choice, not much better, as I changed that comment, but better. I know that's not always the case. I know where my school stands. If this was a Michigan thread, though I do often argue where Michigan falls on the academic scale, I would definitely say go to Michigan over Penn State. If this was a Wisconsin area, I would say go to Wisconsin over Penn State. You always just see my comments about going to Penn State over X school, because why would I go and make numerous posts in a thread where I didn't think Penn State was the better choice. It's just a situational thing.

Were you able to get all the stuff that you had been carrying around towards me off your chest? I hope so. Listen sweetie, I have never wanted your better opinion, so it's time to stop playing hero and following me. As you said "let it go, and go get a life."

Stop ****ing arguing. They're both good schools. One is cheaper and that's all. And I got into both but I would rather go to Bing. So many people go to penn state that when I say I got into Penn State its like so what. I mean it's ranked in top 50. Anyway, Bing is very good at job placement btw. It's definitely harder to get into Bing.Especially this year, apps went up 50 percent. You had to have 1250/1600+ to get in for EA

I think jec7483 is just a sorry soul who could not make it into Penn State lmaooo. Dude that's pretty bad considering how many people go there and how easy it is to get in.

Stop defending the school and go to a party or something, make some friends in real life and not enemies on the internet!!!!!

And for your information I guarantee I'm smarter than you are while at the same time being from Staten Island......so yeahhh

if money isnt a factor. DEFINITELY penn state.

famous sports, more prestigious and i hear binghamton has the highest suicide rates.

one of my friend goes there, you dont get that sunny green campus look youd get at penn.
no lying under a tree and jotting down notes as you watch birds fly by.

you just dont get that great outdoor campus feel
