anyone? (1o char)

This is just a few data points, but I work with people who have attended both schools. Unfortunately they are all engineers, but maybe that closely correlates with math and CS, I'm not sure. Anyway, I know that Stony Brook is supposed to be a great science and engineering school but I have been more impressed with the Binghamton graduates. The department they came from was small for a large university (apparently all the students seemed to know each other), and from what I can tell it was quite intensive. I have read and heard that neither place has a particularly friendly environment, but the Binghamton people feel that is a mischaracterization, they had reasonably good experiences there. Not much commentary either way from the Stony Brook people. Your choice, as you have hinted at, may relate to your financial situation. Assuming you are in-state, does the $6K a year make a big difference to you? If so, go to Stony Brook, because (from personal experience) financial pressures can be a very big negative when you really only want to deal with academic pressures. I doubt you will suffer much if at all academically for making that decision. It is just that, ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, I would probably choose Binghamton.

thanks

the only thing i am concerned about stony brook is the student body

i am from upstate and kinda worry about inner city / long island kids in stony brook

if your upstate bing probably would make you feel more at home

Yes, there will probably be more upstate kids in the mix at Binghamton, but just FYI you will also encounter a large number of downstate kids as well, so be prepared with an open mind whatever you decide

Since Binghamton is pretty cheap already, I'd say that if you like Bing better, go there.

a lot of people are saying that Stony Brook will make some REAL Breakthrough in 5 or 10 years

Didn't know that.. it's probably true though.. I'd say go to the place you liked better.
My sister was accepted to both Binghamton and Stony Brook, she enjoyed her time at Bing and didn't at Stony, so she picked Bing even though she is an LI'er..

I know a few who didn't like Stony because they felt it was dominated by LIers. I'm sure it's a good school though. Overall my vote goes to Bing.

I live near Stony Brook, have taught there and my children have studied there in H.S. I would not want to sway your decision, but since all other posters have chosen Binghamton I will just mention a few things in S.B.'s favor.
1. Weather
2. NYC (very accessible)
3. Stony Brook village and Port Jefferson village
4. Campus is now quite attractive
5. International Film Festival
6. Strong Music Department
7. Arts Center with world class offering
8. Water + beaches
9. Strong program of undergraduate research
10. Reputation in international community as majpr research institution
11. Acquisition of Southampton college for maritime studies
12. Acquisition of Gyrodyne property for business/entrepreneurial studies

If you like Binghamton better, by all means go there. Just wanted to tell you what S.B. had to offer.

Stony Brooks computer science program is one of the best in the country...its just below a lot of schools ranked much higher according to the Gourman report. I've never been to Bing, but the far better accessibility to NYC for Stony is a huge plus, theres an LIRR RIGHT on campus..some people critcize SB for its social life but you can't beat around the bush with what REALLY matters, academics.

Just something to chew on...Gourman undergrad 2006 for CS
