Binghamton or Stonybrook?

I have been accepted to both schools. I believe that Binghamton may be a little better for me; however, my family is pressuring me to attend Stonybrook because it is next to Adelphi- the school that my brother is attending.

I intend to major in Biochemistry with a a double minor in math and computer science.

They are both good schools- any suggestions?!(And I got a 12K presidential scholarship at Stonybrook but nothing at Binghamton)

That is a tough one, I am sort of faced with the same challenge with both schools. But to be honest Binghamton!!

Thank you. I thought i was the only one…i was all for Stony cause i didn’t get the Bing decision but now that i’m faced with both i want to go to Bing. But just like you, my mother and family are all gun-ho for Stony -_-. In the end its going to be a numbers battle royale. But they are both SUNYs how different could they posisbly be. If Bing gives me money then i think that will be the clencher.

But i think Binghamnton is the better choice.

Woah…i just saw that you got money from Stony… yea in the end its definitely going to come down to which school is more affordable and being that Stony (if you are instate) isn’t that expensive even without the scholarship, and i assume you are going to do graduate school, you will be making the smart decision to choose the cheaper school. Hopefully Bing gives you money…who knows.

Wait, what do you plan to major in? I mean, Stony and Binghamton are so different in so many aspects. If you live in NY and are able to afford both places, I definitely recommend Binghamton! You do have to consider what your parents are saying but then it is YOUR college and YOUR 4 years that we are talking about.

My friends who attend Stonybrook say it has dull social atmosphere. Even so, Stonybrook is located in a better area than Binghamton and is in relatively close proximity to nassau Colloseum- wwe events!!(excuse my grammar>.< not majoring in english)! Also, Binghamton is less of a science school and more of a liberal arts school. For these reasons, I have decided to attend Stonybrook!

My Dad and Sister are both graduates of Stony Brook. Both are Math majors. I have heard that the math program is extremely hard. Alot of classes are taught by grad students and some of the professors have a hard time with english. I have been accepted to both and have chosen Binghamton. Stony Brook has a good reputation but living within 15 minutes from the campus I am looking forward to going away. I also have a $27000 scholarship to Hofstra. My Dad was worried that I chose Binghamton, but I know it is a better school. Good luck with your decision.

How come none of you are in favor of Stonybrook? Can someone comment on Stonybrook’s strengths instead of Binghamton’s…(A school’s stats don’t mean everything…Buffalo has low stats but has a good engineering program…right?) Also, are any of you enrolled in the University Scholar’s program at Stonybrook- how is it?

Thanks
I paid the deposit for Stonybrook already.
I plan to double major in computer science and biochemistry with a minor in applied mathematics…
(If I go to Binghamton, then my parents will not help me financially.- Out of the question)

If you want to know about Stony Brook’s strengths, maybe you should start a thread at SUNY Stony Brook forum. Not that people in here are in favor of Binghamton just because of the forum we are in…

Hey, I know you made your choice already, but I just wanted to throw in my experience with Stony from when I attended in 2006. The social atmosphere is quite dull but only on Fridays and Saturdays, because most people live close enough to go home for the weekend and its basically known as a commuter school. Thursday nights get pretty crazy though, but even then, there are enough people that do stay on campus over the weekend to still have a lot of fun.

Also the CS and Biochemistry programs are very good at Stony, and since you are getting a great scholarship, you made a good choice. One problem there is that the school is overcrowded. Back when I was there, very little were tripled, maybe 5% but now its around 75% of freshman I’ve heard. Also when I was there, there were hardly any lines to get food, now you can’t just sneak out of class to grab some food real quick, because the lines are very long sometimes.

You made a great choice, accepted the scholarship, and made the family happy.

Forget the negatives…focus on the positives.

Good start!
