Binghamton Social Scene

After visiting, I've had nothing against Binghamton. It seemed nice, and the food was better than all other colleges I've visited :)

Being a NYS resident helps bring tuition down as well...

However, I have one question about Binghamton...

How is the social scene at Binghamton?

I mean, of course this varies from person to person. But overall, I think everybody is able to find other people similar to them. There’s so many clubs, and activities going on, and the communities I think all have different styles to them… so you’re bound to somehow someway find people that you mix well with. It’s all about how much YOU want to go out and meet people. Don’t expect to meet people just by sitting in your dorm all day.

are there things to do around campus? Or is the area completely dead?

Technomancer, the area isn’t the best. There are some places to eat around campus like Bubble Tea, Dennys and Moe’s isn’t that far away. Most people go to Wallmart or to the movies, or go to the bars like “The Rat”. Personally, the area surrounding the university is one of the things I least like but I know that may not be the same for everyone.

There are nicer areas in Binghamton and the less than nice areas that I would not want to be around if it was dark. The key is to find the nicer areas, or go to things like First Friday where the artists all show off their latest stuff, and you walk around from studio to studio, and different stores participate too. I went in December this past year and it was really cool!

But generally there is either something going on on campus – late night binghamton sometimes has cool things to do or an acapella show, or something. Other than that, there’s a movie theatre in the walmart shopping center which is convenient, with a few restaurants there even.

Their really is a decent assortment of restaurants on the Vestal Parkway, though I’m not positive what would and would not be considered walking distance. There’s Kampai (sp?) further down which I’m pretty sure is a hibachi restaurant (I’ve never been there but I’ve heard a lot of people talk about it), Outback Steakhouse, TGI Friday’s in the Wal-Mart plaza area, Coldstone Creamery, not to mention a ton of other stores, so you should be able to get everything you need within a pretty short bus ride.

I’m from the area, and I will admit that Binghamton is definitely no New York City, or Boston, or Philly, but I don’t really see a dramatic difference between the amount of things to do between Binghamton and other college towns that aren’t in big metropolitan areas. There are clubs, bars, plenty of restaurants, theaters, many stores on the Vestal Parkway, plus some local productions such as the Tri-Cities Opera, the Cider Mill Playhouse (which I personally don’t recommend), not to mention everything going on at the college. There, you’ll have all sorts of sports functions, school productions, a capella groups, and sometimes pretty big names will play at the college. A few years ago My Chemical Romance opened for Green Day there, and I’m pretty sure students got first dibs on the tickets. Aside from that, various shows will come to the arena as well, which I’ve heard rumors that BU may be purchasing.

I think it seems at a lot of schools, the surrounding community doesn’t really matter that much because you’ll spend the majority of your time socializing either through on campus activities or parties that are hosted at off-campus housing. Binghamton may not be the greatest area ever, but that might have very little effect on your college experience unless you’re comparing it to the really big cities that I mentioned before.

And yes, there are nicer and less nice areas of Binghamton. Some areas are dominated by little stores, boutiques, etc., while in others, you’re more likely to encounter a crackwhore.

Haha, hyperjulie you gave a very detailed answer, and I enjoy the use of “crackwhore” being the last word of your essay.

And also keep in mind OP, when you’re at school you’ll likely have a good amount of school work to deal with as well, so between actual work/classes, and things to do on and off campus, you won’t have much time to really be bored.

ok thank you so much guys!

It sounds like you find the college to be enjoyable, and that is what matters to me.

I honestly couldn’t be happier with my choice. It was a very difficult one for me, but when I had visited Bing, it just clicked. =)
