Binghamton SOM vs Bentley.

My D was accepted to both Binghamton SOM and Bentley(1/2 tuition scholarship). Is it worth spending more on Bentley? Are the academics and future employment opportunities better at one over the other? Currently we are considering these two since they are within our budget (we have not been offered any financial aid from any schools).

FWIW, she has so far been accepted to the following:

University of Michigan-Honors
University of Maryland- Honors(5k scholarship/yearly)
Northeastern(14K scholarship/yearly)
Boston University
StonyBrook University-Honors

Where is she looking to work when she graduates?

Don’t look at how much someone is giving you, look at the bottom line cost. Will Bently be affordable for all 4 years.

Tuition at Bentley is $46, 370. Even with half tuition, what you will pay for the other half of tuition at Bentley, will be almost the full cost of attending SUNY. For me, I don’t see the benefit of paying more than twice the cost. If you are from NY, Bing and Stony Brook have strong reputations (stronger than Bentley) in NYC.

Are you in the Northeast? SOM has a very good reputation in the area. As a Binghamton graduate, all of my SOM friends are employed and doing well.

Are they both affordable? If so does your D have a preference?

I looked at Bentley with my S and we liked the school but ultimately my S decided he didn’t want to be in an all-business orientated college. (in case he ended up not enjoying that path, to have a more diverse student body etc.) I can see where Bentley’s all-business focus can be a negative for some like my S while it is a positive attribute for others. How does your D feel about the business focus of Bentley? Is she 100% sure she wants to study business?

Thank you so much for the replies!

Currently my daughter has expressed interest in Applied Mathematics and Statistics but she was also looking into business options. She loves Math and wants to focus on a field that will be Math related. Unfortunately, her high schools’s business program is not very strong and she has not been stimulated with the business classes she has taken (taken App Development, Business and Organizational Management and Sports Marketing of which she has scored 100 in all). She applied to Bentley with an interest in the Mathematical Sciences major. She loves Statistics and thought this would be a good combination of Business and Statistics.

She applied to Binghamton SOM (we are NY residents) because of our concern with the Math program at Binghamton (we have repeatedly heard that it is not one of Binghamton’s strengths). If she attends Binghamton she plans on pursing the SOM curriculum but taking additional Math classes to she were she is happy.

We are also considering the University of Maryland at College Park. They seem to be a very solid STEM school with a strong Math department. Maryland accepted her into their Honors Program. She would be interested in their Mathematics Applied Math/Statistics major with a minor in Operations Management and Business Analytics (part of the business school). She received a merit scholarship of $5,000 a year to this school but it will still cost more than Binghamton. We can afford the Maryland tuition but not sure it is worth the extra price compared to Binghamton.

Any thoughts?

It’s a long time ago, but I only know 5 math majors from Binghamton. Now actuaries or quants and VP’s at New York Life, AXA, Goldman Sachs, and two hedge funds. Who said math is not good at Binghamton?
