Binghamton University Class of 2018 deferred student

@lovedgos I received a letter in the mail

@lilaw88, we got the official Bing Advantage letter today. We’re going to Albany again for admitted students day. I thought he would choose SB, but he preferred Albany. No bad choice here (in my opinion) but I think that’s where he’ll call home. Talked about the Binghamton Advantage again today after getting the letter. In my opinion, to live on a premier campus, but commute 5 miles and attend a community college is just insanity for a freshman experience. I know it will be right for others…but not for him.

…what are your thoughts, or more importantly; your son’s thoughts on this lilaw88?

We got the official letter today too. My son hated Albany and didn’t even want to finish the tour. Although he got in to Albany, he doesn’t want to go there. His first choice is Stony Brook but he is waitlisted there so we have to choose a backup. We are going to Admitted Day at Oneonta on the 12th and will ho see Binghamton on the 11th. He is seriously considering the Advantage program as Bing is a great school, it is not hard to get a 3.2 in a community college and he feels that he would still be a part of the community and be able to matriculate at Bing without having to reapply. He is still hoping for Stony to come through but will choose Bing or Oneonta as a backup.

Sounds like a plan lilaw88! We looked at Oneonta a few months ago, and had signed up for the 12th as well. Hoping Albany will be a fit though! Whether it’s Binghamton for your son or Oneonta or even if StonyBrook comes through…there are NO bad choices here! And they always have the option to transfer!

Are you still going to Oneonta Admitted Day on the 12th?

If he likes Albany as much as our 1st visit; then no! If he’s unsure, then we’ll keep that appt. We know 4 people at Oneonta; all 4 extremely happy! We don’t know anyone presently at Albany, but know people who have went in the past.

In my opinion, I think the Bing Advantage program seems like a good option. Really, if you think about it, what is the difference going to the community college for classes, or on campus at Bing? The degree will not mention Bing Advantage, and all the rest like living on campus, dining halls, clubs, and all that is the same.

We got spring admit… Its is strange to me how they can admit him in Spring but not fall. He got Cornell too for 2015?? So he has to go to another school first, then leave in Jan?? Thant sorta ruins his freshman year. The first few months is when kids start to bond… Dont know what to tell him to do…

Same…I’m rly kinda lost lol…

My dd also spring admit

Deferred EA now spring admit. It is like kissing your sister - close but not good enough. Was waitlisted at 3 of 8 colleges applied to. These schools must be hedging thier bets to get a full class. Will probably not deal with the stress of waitlists and go to UVM. It is a good school and a great college town.

Offered Bing Advantage and definitely doing it!

Also got spring admit…what to do, what to do?

Dear Parents and admitted students of the BAP program,

I was in the BAP program this past year and I can tell you it was a wonderful experience. But I need to warn you a few things prior to move in day.
Admitted students will live in break housing in three different buildings: Delaware in Newing college, Mohawk in CIW and Windham in Mountainview. Most of these dorms contain international students and athletes.
When you go to orientation you will be at BU for the first day and go to BCC the second where you will sign up for classes. Since you are signing up in July, most of the good classes are full and you might have to take a 8am. A 3.2 average is harder than you think, even though it is a CC, they are still college classes and most are based upon BU classes.

Transportation is awful. All the buses come 20mins after the hour and they aren’t every hour. Most of the time they come on time but sometimes they don’t come at all. The bus ride to BCC is about 10-20mins depending on traffic and which way the bus drivers go. Going on BC transit sucks, it takes about a hour to get 1 way. The fastest is the 8 to the 57, any other bus would take much longer. Having a car is awesome but you have to pay two parking passes which can be quite expensive and parking is terrible at both campuses.

All the dining halls have different hours, for example, if you have a 8am the only dining that is open would be CIW at 7am which gives you 10-15mins to eat to catch the 7:20 bus. There are 5 dining halls on campus, each one for each community except for newing and Dickinson which they are combined. The newest is called marketplace which is at the Union and has a wide variety but is very expensive.

Student life at BU is awesome, you get to engage in many clubs and campus culture. Making friends at BU isn’t that hard and you will fit right in. Partying mostly takes place downtown Bing at frats but it can be overwhelming and house parties is where it’s at. On campus partying okay but don’t get caught by your RAs.
Administration treats BAP students like crap, it’s hard to get answers to the many questions that you will have. If you email the leader of the program don’t expect an email back for a couple days. Teachers at BCC are generally quite good, trust ratemyprofessor because it is so true. Some classes to take: Speaking with Papkov. Any classes with Trimm. English 111 with Zapach (do not take 110, waste of time). Theater with Mellert. Medical terminology. Any keyboarding class. Psych with O’Hagen. Ancient Hist with Eckert. Any classes with mckimmy.

Overall I felt my experience was a lot of fun but also very stressful. Getting the gpa requirement was quite hard as I tried to take too many hard classes in the first semester. So balance your schedule and manage your time. I made many friends and had great memorable times. I found myself wanting to be on BU campus than BCC because it’s much better. This program is definitely worth it for the guarantee transfer. Good luck to all who have been admitted and be prepared for anything.
