My S Got into Binghamton and spring admission to Maryland. Would appreciate any input in making this decision. Thanks.

1) are you in-state for either? is cost an issue?
2) what does your s want to study?
3) is size of school an important factor for your s?
4) what are important factors for your s?

without more info about what you are looking for it really isn't easy to comment on the differences.

we are in NY. S has no idea what he wants to study. i don't think he cares about size, although I think a smaller school may be better for him. Is there a significant difference in reputation of the 2 schools?

Both are very popular at my kids' ny high school; I think the perception is that Maryland is warmer and closer to civilization, but I don't know if that's worth the cost difference. Congrats on getting into both! That's an enviable choice to have!

im in the same situation

some answers from people who have previously had to chose between the two would be great

Has he visited both schools? They feel very different to me. It seems to me he would be able to choose pretty easily.

there is no "right" decision.
i've had friends whose kids have had this choice -- some ended up in binghamton, some in maryland -- all are happy.
for those for whom cost was an issue, binghamton was the clear choice (in-staters involved).
for those for whom being a metro ride from dc was important, maryland was the clear choice.
for those accepted into a specific program at either school that was appealing, that tipped the scales.
for others, it was simply some other factor that was important to them (eg, being closer to home vs not being near home; being with kids they knew vs getting away from kids they knew; preference for size, etc.)
lurkness makes a good point - a visit is always a good way to make a decision.

Maryland COA is around $33,000 for out of state. Seems to me if cost is an issue (I always assume that it is), you would really have to have some compelling reason to go there over Bing. Maryland is more highly ranked, but not by too much.

If he's spring admission to Maryland can you send a deposit in but start at Bing and see how he likes it? Does that work?

He hasn't visited either school and its not likely we will before May 1. I think he will choose Binghamton because of the spring admission and the price difference. Thanks everyone for your input.

He must visit the schools before making a decision. It has to "smell right"
I think either school is grat. However, al little more insight into Maryland, the COA with room and board las year was actually 37,000 for OOS. My sister was admitted there and ended up not attending because she gor into the Spring and wanted a full experience, start in the Fall which you also need to consider as a factor.

I am one of those people who had to choose. I got waitlisted between Maryland and Binghamton and I chose Binghamton over Maryland. I chose Bing mainly because If I would have gone to Maryland I would have had to take out loans for law school and additionally, I don't think Maryland is worth the extra 15k a year over Binghamton. My rationale was that if Maryland was a Michigan, UCLA or Uva, it would have been worth the money to go out of state, but it the end I didnt think Maryland had that much leverage over bing (besides sports, quality of life). I visited both schools before I made my decision.

well looking back now, what do those of you that chose binghamton think of your decision? how do you like it there?
