Binghamton vs Ithaca

I plan on going to either of these college for communications but I'm torn between the two because Ithaca has a great communications school with a new major called emerging media(1 of only 2 schools in the country that offers it to undergrads I think) that im really interested in while Binghamton being a more prestigious and harder school doesnt have a strong focus on communications, but I know I'll have more fun there because it's a nicer campus and I know people there so I know I'll have a good time and it's also a good school. Please help persuade me in either direction. Thanks in advance.

You left out the finances. Ithaca is $52,300 next year. Bing. is $23,000 in-state. How does that figure for you?

sorry for not including that, finances are no concern and i also have a guaranteed transfer to cornell next year as a sophomore as well if that helps in anyway

Many questions…many comments haha

1) do you anticipate taking the transfer to Cornell? Into what school? I don’t recall Cornell having a comm major…but not sure since my daughter has graduated

2) given the answer to #1, if, “yes” I would advise Binghamton for freshman year; more likely that your courses will be accepted to Cornell as pre-Reqs.

3) if you’re not sure that you will attend Cornell, and you definitely want comm, Park has the better recruiting and alumni base over Binghamton; it is not only about that “four letter word” (pres*ige)

If finances are not a concern, I personally would go to Ithaca for Communications. I’m from the Ithaca area, so if you didn’t like IC’s campus, I’m sure living in/near the city of Ithaca will make up for it.

And as Rodney points out, Park has very good connections, and is a highly regarded comm school.

As a GT, it shouldn’t really matter which school you choose as a freshman, but if you’re not sure if you’d like to use the GT, you’d be well-suited to spend all 4 years at Ithaca if you choose not to.

I’m not sure about the Cornell transfer but it’s non binding so I don’t have to make a definite decision yet and it’s CALS, and I realize that Park makes more sense but for some reason I just cant bring myself to make a decision yet knowingly knowing how life will be at Ithaca as opposed to a good time that I’ll know I’ll have at Binghamton

Is there a minimum GPA needed to get your “guaranteed” transfer to Cornell?

3.0 which I think is easily obtainable

Do you need to take any specific coursework in that time frame like gen eds?

Only like general communication classes which would be fulfilled at either school the first year

If you are hard set on Communications, then I would go to Ithaca to get a taste for it before deciding on Cornell. If your wavering on a major, go to Bing.

Friends and fun issues at Bing. are for you to decide upon. I assume you can make friends at Ithaca too.
