Binghamton vs. Northeastern

So I'm still waiting on my first choice, University of Michigan, but they've dragged out the process for so long and I'm feeling that it's a rejection coming that I've been waiting for all these months for, so I'm trying to move on. My major would be poly sci in both schools, and I've heard Bing has an up and coming poly sci program. I want to know why I should go to one over the other. NEU is located in a great city while Binghamton is dead from what I hear, but I'd be paying a total of 29k/yr for NEU but only 14K for Bing. I also would like to transfer after my freshman year, and Binghamton has one of the highest transfer rates in the region. NEU does have a good co-op program. I've also read that Bing is like high school for some people, and this would ring true considering that over 30 kids a year seem to attend Bing from my high school and most of them aren't people I'm close with (I go to a big high school). Any other pros or cons to anyone who has visited Bing or is a student there?

I am a sophomore at Bing, maybe I can give you some advice.

Many of the statements you said are largely true... bing use to be a good place to live. It was the birthplace of IBM. However, when IBM left it literally took the whole town with it lol...so its relatively an urban slum because there arent enough jobs and the economy in Bing is very weak/stagnating...lots of ppl are leaving the town.

However, despite all of this, the $$$ you pay at binghamton and the reputation it has, is well worth it. I mean ofcourse upstate NY isnt the cultural center of the world, but its not like your living there permanently. With that said, it depends on what you want. If your looking at grad school, go to bing to save money, if your looking for a great undergrad experience without grad school go to NU. NU is another up and coming school and I know a kid from Bing who transferred there last year because he was a music major and he wasnt too happy at binghamton.

One thing overlooked about Binghamton is that people always complain about how it doesnt have a reputation out of state. I always counter that argument because NYC is located in NY. Bing doesnt need a reputation across the country really because it has a great rep in NYC, where it counts. I know tons of Bing grads that work in Manhattan with great jobs and great careers. If your looking at working in NYC, then Binghamton isnt that bad.

One last thing....

Last year in terms of political science departments, Binghamton was ranked 19th in the world... Enjoy....

That's an interesting link. Most likely, peer review and the way other colleges see a university or a department warrants more attention from employers than a school's "reputation" or U.S. News ranking.
