Binghamton vs. Oswego

I got accepted into both universities but I now have the dilemma over which one to go to... I have no idea about what each campus looks like since I live in South America and I won't be able to visit them. Nor do I have any idea about the surrounding area but I prefer somewhere where there's plenty to do. I'm planning on majoring in Biology, btw.

Also, Oswego gave me a Residential scholarship so that makes things more complicated. I filed for financial aid VERY late so I dunno if I'll get any help............

Can someone give me advice?

Thanks! :D

I have never been to either campus but I know that Binghamton has a better academic reputation. Since you're from South America you might be better off in Binghamton since it's not quite as cold as Oswego is (Oswego is on Lake Ontario).

Thanks for all the input! :D

Anyone else?

Binghamton is very cold and Oswego is very very cold, so I wouldn't let weather be the deciding factor. Oswego has way more bars and is a college town, where as Bing is kind of just a college next to a bunch of strip malls.

Of those two choices, I would say Binghamton. It has a much better academic reputation and I know quite a few students that go there and are very happy.

Oswego is a very mediocre school. Binghamton is very highly ranked. It's considered one of the best state universities in the United States and getting better every year. If you can swing it without the scholarship Oswego is offering you, I would not even think twice about it. Binghamton is the better choice, and a much more serious school for a Biology major.

Binghamton is not considered one of the best state universities in the United States. Not by a long shot. And what exactly do you mean by "very highly ranked"?

I would never call Oswego "very mediocre." It's come a long way in the last couple of years. Yes, Binghamton has a better historical academic reputation, but that's not to denigrate Oswego at all. They're very different campuses.

Chris

Chris nice to see positive feedback re: different SUNY schools from someone on the inside. I realize some think that means you can't be objective but I disagree as most negative posters do not have enough info to accurately support their sweeping negative generalizations about SUNY schools.

cheesiestyle: Oswego has a college town? That is rather interesting, indeed. Are you an Oswego student?

Hm, well it seems Binghamton is stronger academically than Oswego? How about the social life in each university? What are the buildings themselves like?

Thanks to everyone who replied! :)

Oswego has a nice little college town. There's not a ton there, but it is right on the water, which is nice. Plus, you're only about a half-hour from Syracuse, which has a lot more to offer, city-wise, than Binghamton does.

Chris

I would say Binghamton just because of the higher prestige. Though I have heard good things about Oswego as well. I don't' know if weather plays a factor or not.

I am very very biased though, being that I will be going to Bing. in the fall. A lot of it depends on what kind of student body you want to be with. Binghamton is a large state university, that's on the more selective side. Keep that in mind, and I wish you luck with your decision.

For whatever this might be worth, I have a relative who graduated from Oswego many years ago. He is very successful today. He went to a SUNY community college for 2 years, and then transferred to Oswego for 2 years. He loved his time at Oswego.

BurntFlower: yo eligiria Binghamton. Ni comparacion con Oswego. Los dos estan ubicados en el medio de nada pero a Binghamton se lo conoce mas. Tiene muy buena reputacion especialmente si estas planeando quedarte en el estado de New York.
Que tengas suerte.

Um, they are both SUNY schools. I am a 1993 Oswego grad and I loved the school the social life and most of all the campus. It is beautiful, nestled on the edge of Lake Ontario and is picturesque. The academics at Oswego are solid and comparable to Binghamton. I don't think grad schools will make a distinction between the schools either. If you prefer a small college town that is very cold, and snowy in the winter with a gorgeous campus and solid academics, go to Oswego. Oswego is almost 100% focused on undergraduate education as well, it is molded on a small liberal arts paradigm.

If you prefer a slightly milder climate, a more urban atmosphere, a more traditional University model (as opposed to liberal arts type of school) and a school with a higher percentage of grad/professional students, and is ranked top 100, go to Binghamton. The schools have different personalities.

Binghamton is ultimately regarded a "highly respected SUNY school!" With no disrespect for Oswego, Binghamton will be a more competitive educational atmosphere. It is much more selective than Oswego.

If I were you I would go to Binghamton, especially for Biology.

Personally I’m a student at Oswego. Binghamton is a better school academically, no contest. However, Oswego reputable in it’s own ways. For BIO Bing may be a better option. However Oswego really has a wonderful campus, the social aspect is spot on. I find the professors are usually very down to earth and willing to help students succeed, it’s a very friendly atmosphere and it’s easy to meet people. Someone said Oswego has a lot of bars, this is very true. We are int he guiness bok of world records for having the most bars per capita. Make your own decisions, I have a buddy who has a ton of pictures of the campus, if you’d like them PM me.
