Binghamton vs Stony Brook

I know this has been an ongoing debate but I'm really conflicted. I'm choosing between SB and Bing which both seem like great options.

At Stony Brook I would study marine biology or biology (double major/major & minor- i'm not sure yet) but I know their school of marine and atmospheric sciences is good.
However, I hear of many, many people disliking Stony Brook. I love on LI about an 45 mins-hour away but would dorm there at least for the first two years. I'm worried about the low 4 year graduation rate, I don't really want to be on Long Island for another 4 years, etc.

At Binghamton I would study environmental science or biology (double major/major & minor-also not sure yet)
My sister goes to bing and loves it, I know so many other people who love it as well and I also know people that would still be there when I am a freshman so that's pretty comforting. It's colder up there than on Long Island so that's a con for me.

Do you guys have any suggestions about the programs or pros/cons about the schools in general? I'd probably be going to grad school after so any ideas about which college is better for getting into good grad schools? Why do so many people not like Stony Brook? Is Stony Brook really competitive and stressful? Anything you could offer would be really appreciated! Thanks so much!

I would go to Binghamton - it has more of a traditional college experience. Stony Brook is strong in computer science (its strongest field), but has more commuters which gives the school a different vibe.

" I don’t really want to be on Long Island for another 4 years, etc"

I think you have answered your own question?

Being that your sister goes to BING, I am sure you have visited there, have you visited Stony Brook? If not, you are only 45 minutes away, visit Stony Brook ASAP and then maybe your decision will become easier?

Two really good choices though, congratulations and good luck!

.

Stony Brook for anything STEM related, hands down
