Binghamton vs Stony Brook

I got accepted into the Watson School of Engineering at Bing and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook. I was just wondering which one was the better school for engineering. What are the classes like? What are the research programs like? How reputable are the schools? From which school do jobs favor the degree more? In addition, I would like to know how people feel about the campuses themselves and their overall experience at these universities. What are some things to do or places to explore? I’m really stuck between the two and any information you can give would be really helpful. Thanks.

OK, Stony Brook is a bit better known for engineering and the academics are considered stronger there. However, they are both fine schools, you will get a job no matter where you go. The con of stony brook is that it’s known as a commuter school. Many students live on long island and commute and the students that dorm go home on the weekends. The students that stay on campus are internationals that stick to themselves and don’t speak English. There are clubs on campus but the social life can be lacking. Binghamton on the other hand has a lot of residential students and a much livelier campus and social life. If you want “the college experience” it the better choice. Binghamton’s program is also smaller. If you are fine with commuting and saving money, stony brook is a good choice but if you want something more well rounded bing would be better.

Did you have a chance to visit both schools yet?

Yes, I visited both schools. I like both campuses a lot, but Stony’s is a little better. Regardless if its mostly dead and dull, then I don’t know if I’d want that really. While Binghamton has a small campus if its pretty lively then it might be a good choice. I’m kind of biased against Stony Brook. I was accepted into the civil engineering program which hasn’t been accredited yet so I’m not sure about whether its a good idea to enroll.

My main impression of SB is that it’s a commuter school. I’ve heard it’s really dead on the weekends. Binghamton’s campus is vibrant. Both reputations are good but I don’t know how I’d personally feel about an unaccredited program.
