Binghamton - What's up?

Is anyone aware of any sort of problem at SUNY-Binghamton? Son submitted the Common App to them over a month ago and has gotten no acknowledgement of any kind. Their status checker yields either a "page cannot be displayed" message or a message saying it will be up in "mid-October" (lol), depending on how you hit it.

Obviously, Son needs to call them. Before he does I just wanted to see if the grapevine has anything to say.

OK ... for anyone who cares, he called and was told that (1) they got his app, (2) they can't confirm if he is Complete, (3) he should call back after Nov. 1.

My oldest applied EA to Binghamton. This was several years ago. The exact same thing happened to him. We then found out through his highschool that his records and that of another young man's were scrambled together because of the same first and last name and similar SSNs. We never did get any confirmation that it was straightened out. He was accepted early (or perhaps it was the other kid, and he got the acceptance, heh, heh), and that was it. But I remember well the frustration when we found out that there was a mix up.

heh, I sent my feewaiver a few weeks ago to Bing and Stoney...I've heard from Stoney, but no Bing ...

Son e-mailed them, and yesterday they responded that he's Complete.

The status checker still not being up is pretty bush league, though.

I wish every college had that status checker thing.

A few years ago, most of the colleges my D applied to had them, but so far none of the ones my younger D applied EA to has them.

Status checker's finally up.

You might want to find yesterday's Wall Street Journal - there was an article about the appeal of state universities and Binghamton was featured. I don't think you can access it online without paying.

My friend's daughter applied to Bing a few weeks ago. She received a letter saying that the school had received her application. The odd part is that the letter said the school would start reviewing applications in March and give her a decision in April. Whatever happened to rolling admissions? Has anyone else received the letter?

Hi Lurk. Don't know about rolling, but S got a letter saying that his freshman early action application would, if complete, result in a decision in early January.

Thanks for the reply! She'll have to call or e-mail the admissions office.

Lurk - I don't think Bing is a "rolling" school, is it? EA decisions come out in January, RD decisions come out in March-April.

According to the Bing web site, there is early action (not binding) and also modified rolling admissions after that. My friend will call and see what's up. I'm hoping this isn't a kind of deferral. If she finds out anything interesting, I'll post again. Thanks for the info!

Oops, I see it now, "modified rolling admissions," you're absolutely right.

But still, based on my older boy's experience a few years ago, and the experience of others at our HS (which sends a dozen or more kids every year to Bing), their "modified rolling admissions" isn't likely to get you a decision before March. This document on the website seems to admit as much: http://admissions.binghamton.edu/apply/applications/ApplicationChecklist.pdf

Only checking the EA box will get a faster decision. So, I see the letter you describe as simply telling the student the applicable timetable, and not as any sort of deferral.

Good luck to the young lady in question!

My S applied to SUNY Buffalo through the SUNY site and the Status checker kept us on the progress very well.

He applied to Buffalo after hearing about 4 of his high school siblings' freinds from L.I. getting into fantastic graduates schools with great internships ( Tulane , Yale , NYU ) after their graduation from SUNY Buffalo .

I was disapointed that he did not want to even apply to Geneseo . The faculty there seem very accessible and just as good as private schools ( my D is at a good private ) . He said there were "too many girls " ..........

I could not find the ratio of girls to boys for 2006 year . Any one know how to access SUNY's common data ???
