Bio 171 Textbooks

I've been looking into buying textbooks for my bio class and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on which ones to get. Biological Science 4th Edition with Masteringbiology by Freeman doesn't seem to be getting the greatest reviews by people. From what I've read, Campbell Biology 9th Edition, which supposedly comes with masteringbiology, is the one to get.

If anyone who has taken this class could help explain which one I should get that would be great! Also, if there are any textbooks/guides that would supplement this class well that would be great as well.

Am I going to use the same textbook for bio 171/172?

I would not suggest deviating from the required textbook for the course. You do need mastering biology though. If you want a supplement to Freeman’s Biological Science, I would suggest Russell’s Biology or Campbell’s Biology. BIO 172/172 does both use Freeman’s Biological Science.

I have a question on textbooks too. I notice on Wolv some of my classes still don’t have the list (to be determined)…I want to avoid buying at the campus stores cause I keep hearing they’re a ripoff and the lines suck. I’m thinkin that’s why they don’t show the list yet, so we can’t buy online. So should I pester the department, email the prof? Is there some other way to find this?

Most of the time the textbook has not been determined yet. They usually post their syllabus on CTools along with the required textbook. It may or may not be posed onto Wolverine Access. Usually since the first couple of weeks are when students add/drop classes, profs give a leeway time for students to gather correct course materials. Amazon also has something called Amazon Prime. It’s free for 6 months and they have 2 day shipping.

Ok tyvm. I’ll just order online then either way.

Is it actually worth buying a supplement book like Campbell’s biology? I’ve just heard that the book I’d need for bio 171 is pretty awful.

Bump!

I took Bio 171 and 172 my freshman year, and in general, it’s best to buy the book that the profs recommend. Even if it may not be the most helpful book (I personally think that the recommended book is more useful as a doorstop than as a learning tool), it is good to have it around to look up information you might be confused about. My professor for 172 told us that it should be used more as a reference tool than as required reading for each night anyway (the vast majority of the information on exams comes from lecture slides and discussion sections). Buy the book used, if you can.
