Hi all…long time lurker. Love all the advice!!! I have a question: Son has accepted admission to OSU and his step-father and I are fully prepared to fund. FAFSA has been filed with our financial info and processed. My question is, should his bio father decide that he would like to contribute will he be able to take out a parent loan?
Yes, he can.
Thank you!!
@cptofthehouse
Yes, I think that’s correct. However, if the bio dad isn’t on FAFSA, does he have to submit something else?
Any parent can apply for PLUS, even if they are not custodial parent indicated on the FAFSA. He shouldn’t have to provide any additional information.
So, does that mean that a Plus loan can be taken out without filing FAFSA at all?
“In all cases, the dependent student on whose behalf a parent has applied for a Direct PLUS Loan must have filed a FAFSA. This requirement ensures that student eligibility data matches are conducted to verify that the dependent
student on whose behalf the parent is borrowing”
ok…thanks…that makes sense.
A step parent who is the spouse of the NCP cannot take out PLUS, but the step parent who is the spouse of the custodial parent can.
Correct cpt, I should have specified more earlier by saying any biological parent can apply.
Thanks all!!!
