Hey everyone, what is a good major for medical school? I have heard the rumors that it doesn't really matter as long as you take all the hard-core sciences. Also, does anyone know if I am going to major in Bio in Cornell, what college should I apply? Hopefully, it's also gonna be a easier college to get in. Thx~

Bio major is offered in both CALS and CAS at Cornell. The major is identical but the respective distribution requirements of the colleges will diverge.

Statistically, CALS is easier to get into than CAS. Also, if you are a New York citizen, you get a tution cut from CALS.

im a bio major right now, but considering switching to econ. you should only major in bio if it is really really what you like, and not because it would look good for med school. i think for students accepted to med school only 50% are science majors. furthermore, i'm working in a med research group this summer with dr.'s and 2 med students, who have advised me to go with the major i would most like to do, especially if it has a higher average gpa.

the only reason i want to do a bio minor is because i will be halfway there with my premed requirements and am really interested in microbio courses. as a premed student, you need 2 sem intro bio and intro chemistry with lab. 2 classes of math (i took stat and calc), 2 sem orgo with 1 sem orgo lab, 1 year physics. you do not need biochem or genetics, or many of the other bio classes (ie evolutionary, etc) even though some med schools suggest they may help (but not really for admission, most likely for your first year).

also, due to the high number of NYS residents applying to CALS bio, i would think that it is just as hard to get into CALS bio as CAS. while CALS is overall easier to get into, majors such as bio and aem are just as tough as getting into CAS. the programs are identical, so if you are from NY and want to be in bio, go to CALS. it is not looked down upon (the degree says cornell, not CALS) except maybe by your misinformed friends who think CALS is a suny.

thx alotz guys~ so fo for a easy GPA major, if i understood correctly~ i don't want cut-throat competition!~

I'm a bio major and premed and my GPA is just fine. There's no need to choose an easy major simply for the sake of choosing an easy major. Heck, all of my A+'s to date have been in science courses. Do bio if you are interested. If not, choose another major. That's fine too.

agreed, my gpa is fine, but i have other interests outside of biology, and if you do too, you can always consider another major. it wont be looked down upon as long as you do well in your science courses.
