Hi, My friend and I are having an extremely hard time deciding between UCSD Warren College and UCLA for biochem/bio major. I believe that UCSD is better at both of these subjects/sciences in general, but the name of a UCLA degree is also something to consider. My question is, which school should we choose if we're planning to go the pre-pharmacy/pre-med route at the school? Also, is the competition at both schools equal (ie. easier at one or the other?). We're planning to go to graduate school, so take that into considering on which would be the ideal choice to go to if we wanted to a top graduate school, rather than a lower ranked one? Also, how are the research opportunities at both schools? What are your opinions of both of these schools and could you possibly list some other pros and cons to help us decide? The campus, social life, and transportation is probably not a factor, as we visited both, and liked them equally.

competition is equally as fierce at both schools. the campus, social life, at general structure of coursework is completely different at both schools. SD has the six college system where you can get a "liberal arts education at a large public school." They're just completely different to make any comparisons. If you like a louder more energetic student body, the LA is better. If you are more mellow then Id suggest SD.

I'm also very curious about this. Does anyone have any more input?

I'm planning to do pre-med. Actually, I KNOW I want to do pre-med. Right now I'm trying to decide among UCD, UCSD, and UCLA.

I think I can get a more personalized education at UCD (and it's SOOO close to home), which might better prepare me for grad/med school. At the same time, SD has a really great science program, and LA is..well, LA. I really loved it when I visited, but I'm afraid my feelings might change when I realize how big the school is.

All three of the schools are big, but LA is (like you said) huge. It doesn't matter where you do your undergraduate education (for premed) so if you love LA then come here. One thing that made me come to LA was that it was close to home, so don't feel bad if it's the reason why you choose Davis over LA.
Since you're premed, all three campuses will have TONS of opportunities for you. SD and LA are research powerhouses and Davis has lots of clinical as well as research opportunities. All three also have major teaching hospitals (clinical research/volunteering). It really comes down to where you'll be most comfortable

^ if you're gonna nitpick on size, then sure... xD
i chose LA over SD and davis. granted, i'm not a science major, but i chose the school where i would be happiest.
davis was close to home and offered regents, but i felt that UCLA offered more opportunities for growth, both inside and outside the classroom.
the school you choose should be the one where you envision yourself being the happiest. happiness -> more involvement with the campus -> good attitude -> good grades/GPA -> better chances at grad school. if you excel at davis, you'd have a better chance than if you floundered at ucla/sd, despite the higher rankings/prestige of the latter two.
go where you see yourself succeeding: don't limit yourself to just academic factors, but weigh them with the other things you're looking to get out of your college experience :)
