I am currently a high school senior. I want to eventually go into medical school and specialize in oncology or cardiology. I was just wondering which major is better to major in, biochem or bio?. Ik it really dont matter but I wanna know which major is the best to have just in case I dont want to go to med school. Which one can I get more jobs with?

Biochem major is harder I believe, but is much more fundamental to medicine, as it will allow you to learn about many things, including how biological functions work on a chemical level and how drugs & pharmaceuticals actually work. Pretty cool in my opinion. Biology is a bit more general I believe, but you probably have to learn a little biochem. You get to learn other cool things though, like genetics and stuff like that. But sadly, a bachelor’s degree in science doesn’t really do much for you in terms of jobs. They want to see Master’s, PhD’s and/or MD’s in labs and hospitals, unfortunately.

They’re both practical. Just pick whichever you enjoy more. If you don’t love biology, a career in biology will be pretty tough to live with. The two majors sound similar but have some really important differences (mainly biochem being heavy on chemistry).

Biochem is probably a better degree to have in general, but again, it should come down to your preferences.

Biology, chemistry, and biochemistry do not have particularly good job and career prospects.
Doing pre-med does not require any particular major; you may take the pre-med courses alongside any major (although biology is popular because it is “convenient” in that the pre-med courses are usually a subset of biology major courses).

Biochemistry would help you more for the MCAT, I believe, since general biology is possible to study on your own.
