Biochem vs. Chem

So i know i probably want to do a chem type major in college

What i was wondering is assuming i can get above a 3.5 in each major, whihc one looks better on a med school application.

I believe there is very little difference. Do yourself a favor by majoring in whatever major you like better.

If you enjoy thermo/quantum stuff, chemistry may have a lot of that. I guess that biochem tends to be more application-oriented (protein, DNA/RNA, etc.) and may be more directly applicable to medical sciences. Some people like biochem; some do not.

Frequent contributors to this forum, shades_children and mmmcdowe, majored in these and got into medical schools. Their inputs would be more useful to you than mine, if one of them gives you his input.

There would be little to no difference, in my opinion. On one hand, biochem is a little more applicable to medical school, but it isn’t necessarily going to PREPARE you better for medical. On the other, Chemistry is considered to be a little more rigourous due to a higer emphasis on math, which can be the bane of many a pre-med. I would personally do as mcat2 says. If you like inorganic and pure organic chemistry, rock on with chemistry. You will be more likely to get a 3.5 or higher that way. If you would rather focus on the goings on of the degradation of glucose rather than the degradation of isotopes, rock on with biochemistry. The courses overlap enormously, and you will have electives that (if used properly) make the two majors almost identical except for the very highest level courses.

Thanks for your replies

I seem to be good at chem (5 on AP and 800 on SAT II) and i like it alot. I have yet to take biology though.

From your replies it seems like chem would be a better fit for me right now.
