Biochem?

Hi what would me chances be for biochemistry?
I have a 3.789 weighted cumulative GPA, about a 3.5 unweighted. 30 on the ACT, essays were good, I was in Key Club for 2 years, JSA for 2 years, iSTEM this year, and have played cricket for a club for 2 years. What do my chances look like for UIUC? Does anyone know how I match up for Loyola? (LUC). Thanks!!!

I’d say match, slight reach for biochem. At the very least, you’ll get an offer for DGS. I have no idea of your chances for LUC. What is your class rank, and your subscores in Science and Math?

I would say you are 100% in for UIUC, not sure about Loyola.

My school doesnt have class rank. My ACT math was a 31, and science was a 27. Is biochemistry particularily competitive?

Bump 10 char

i’d say you have a pretty good chance of getting. taken from someone who got in originally for biochem.

Thanks chemesrule and Balthezar and Radiums for your responses. Lol, I’m so nervous about getting in!

Got postponed until March 15 by University of Wisconsin-Madison, lol, does that make it relative to be able to judge how I far for UIUC?

uw is already posting decisions? when did you apply?

uiuc is relatively easier than uw. you are still good.

UW has rolling admissions announcements, so they announce in batches, I believe, weekly. I’m not sure where you’re getting your information about UIUC “being relatively easier”. It would depend on the program, but UW and UIUC are very comparable in terms of selectivity of applicants.

^my comment about relative ease is with respect to overall admission rate (uw ~50+%, uiuc ~65+%). granted, programmatic differences exist. also, uw admits regardless of major, and uiuc considers it.

With all due respect, it’s irrelevant what percentage of applications an institution rejects. What matters to an individual applicant is the likelihood of receiving an acceptance based on his/her stats when compared to those who have been accepted at the institution in question. That being said, UW-Madison’s typical freshman profile is a class rank in the 85–96 percentile, 27–29 on the ACT and/or 1860–2090 on the SAT. The University of Illinois’ mid-50% Freshman Profile is a class rank of 84-96, 27-32 on the ACT and/or 1890-2120 on the SAT.

As I said, UW-Madison and UIUC are comparable in that both are very selective state flagships, and have virtually identical freshman profiles.

Yes, at UW-Madison, you need to request admission to a major your sophomore year, and your freshman grades and the courses you’ve taken are considered. It’s not guarenteed that you’ll get into your desired major at UW-Madison, once admitted as a freshman. I believe it’s a big plus that at UIUC, you can get admitted, based on your high school record, directly into your major of choice.
