Biochemistry and Molecular Bio at UCD and other UC's

Hello everyone!

Does anyone know how competitive is Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UC Davis or any of the other UC’s? I heard it’s competitive at UC Davis, or at least that they receive a lot of applicants, but I was wondering if anyone knows the average profile for freshmen that get into the major or anything like that; more specifically, how good of a student do you have to be to get accepted for the major at any of the UC’s? How well do your grades and scores have to be?

All UC’s are competitive and the best chances for any major is to be at least at or above their average UC Capped weighted GPA’s and test scores.
What is your capped weighted UC GPA and test scores?

@Gumbymom it was a 4.33

The UC’s have Freshman profiles posted in the UC website but the information is by campus and not major specific.

Here is a summary of the UC data and again not major specific, but the more competitive majors will have higher GPA’s and test scores. UC’s also consider HS course rigor, personal insight essays and EC’s in their application review so GPA/Test scores are very important but not the only consideration.

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCB: 4.23
UCLA: 4.23
UCSD: 4.16
UCSB: 4.13
UCI: 4.13
UCD: 4.11
UCSC: 3.96
UCR: 3.81
UCM: 3.71

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCB: 1360-1540

UCLA: 1340-1540
UCSD: 1300-1520
UCSB: 1270-1500
UCD: 1220-1480
UCI: 1230-1490
UCSC: 1210-1450
UCR: 1130-1380
UCM: 1020-1280

25th - 75th percentiles for ACT:
UCB: 30-35
UCLA: 31-35
UCSD: 28-34
UCSB: 28-34
UCD: 26-33
UCI: 26-33
UCSC: 26-32
UCR: 22-30
UCM: 19-26

I also have admit rates (general not major specific) based on your Capped weighted UC GPA so if you post your GPA and I list the admit rates for each campus.

@sky20675: What about test scores? Where do you fall in the data I listed? HS course rigor? EC’s?

I am going to take the SAT again but at the moment I have 1340. For ACT, I have a 29

UC’s tend to be very GPA focused so your UC GPA of 4.33 makes you competitive for all UC’s. For UCSD, UCLA and UCB you will want to be in the 1400+ range with your test scores.

This is 2017 data since 2018 data is not available, but all the UC’s with the exception of UCLA/UCB look possible. Bump up your SAT scores and UCLA/UCB will also be within Reach. Best of luck.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 4.20 or above:

UCB: 42.7%
UCLA: 47.2%
UCSD: 84.2%
UCSB: 82.0%
UCD: 90.3%
UCI: 94.1%
UCSC: 92.7%
UCR: 97.5
UCM: 98.1%

@Gumbymom Alright, thank you! Quick question though, where did you get all the stats from?

The SAT percentiles and Average GPA data is available on the UC website under Freshman profiles for each campus. I just consolidated the data for my use.

The admit rates are found in the UCOP website. Usually the updated 2018 data will be available early 2019:

UCI is the only campus that I have found that publishes their average UC capped weighted GPA and SAT scores for each major. Again only 2017 data available and I am sure the #’s will be different for 2018 admissions.
