I am an incoming freshman at the U of I, and I am currently a biochemistry major. Recently, however, I have begun to think that transferring into the chemical and biomolecular engineering program may be a smarter choice. Right now, I am premed, but if I change my mind or if my plan to become a doctor falls through for any reason, I would like a reliable major to fall back on... and I have heard mixed reviews about biochemistry.

I am a fairly good student. I had a 5.8/5.0 GPA in high school, a 34 ACT, and I received 5s in AP US History, English Language and Composition and AB Calc and a 4 in Chemistry (I was a little disappointed about the chemistry score, but I guess some days are just not our best testing days). I don't mind a challenge, and I think I would like chemical engineering, but I don't want to get in over my head, especially since I've heard that medical schools really pay attention to GPA.

So I guess my question is should I stick with biochemistry or should I transfer into the chemical and biomolecular engineering program? Would a chemical engineering degree be overkill for premed?
