I'm going to be majoring in biochemistry at Purdue University this fall. I was wondering what kind of programs I will need for biochem? I couldn't find anything about this on the college web site and have sent an email to an advisor but they're busy scheduling other freshmen so I'm not expecting a quick reply. I'm looking to get a laptop this summer and I need to know what kind of power I need. Is it common for bio or chem classes to require or recommend cpu or gpu intensive programs? Anything else I have to watch out for?

I've worked in a computational biology lab, and all the computations are done on remote computers, and almost never on your local machine. You don't have to worry about computing requirements on a personal laptop.

If you want something reliable and dependable, I suggest getting a Thinkpad. All the laptops in the Thinkpad line are very well built and will last you for years.

you won't be doing anything special...so get anything you like.

personally, i don't like Thinkpads. they're sturdy and durable and everything, but i think they feel funny and i don't particularly like the keyboard.
