I will be attending UCD the following Fall semester and I am wondering if any of you are currently or had previously majored in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. I heard great things about the Biological Sciences programs offered at UCD and I’m curious to know your opinions and experiences. I’m planning to apply to med school after I graduate so I’m also curious to whether getting a GPA of 3.8-4.0 will be possible? Regardless, I am excited to attend UCD, it had always been my dream school.

Davis! I hope I get accepted. It is a school that will be on the top of my list, but Irvine as a back up is a good plan, but just TOO far away from home so I can’t come back on breaks without buying an expensive plane ticket.

I hope so! I will be doing pre med too, but I likely won’t choose a hard major like biochem and molecular biology which seems pretty hard. Likely something like bio sci… biology … or chemistry.

Actually, I might change my major to Cell Biology, which is essentially most of the same classes but Physical Chemistry is not required. I dislike Calculus so incorporating it to my favorite subject doesn’t sound too appealing.

Indianjatt and lovefliesx3, what is your major?

Best of luck to you too! I hope you guys get in. ;)

Ahh… my friend is a 5th year majoring in Microbiology. Chances are, you will end up changing your major so just be open to possibilities Be sure to check the requirements for your major and requirements for med school because they might not be the same. I hear NPB (neurology, physiology, and behavior) major covers everything for med school, but I’m not sure.
A 3.8-4.0?!? It’s possible, but extremely difficult. Nearly impossible as an engineering major, so if you’re SURE you’re gonna aim for med school, stay clear of engineering (this means no 21 series for math) classes.

JoJoan— It currently is undeclared humanities, but my initial thought process was “easy major… easy gpa…fit in all the pre med requirements and good to go…” But I realized that maybe it won’t be that easy because humanity majors will write lots of essays which I hate and I didn’t consider that when I applied. I also realized I’d rather have a science degree as it is far more interesting and have all my courses for medical school be incorporated into my degree. So I hope, if I get accepted, to switch my major to the sciences.

Saviorknights, thanks! Yes, the major I’m considering includes all med school requirements. The only downfall is the stories of how hard the classes are, but I’m ready for a challenge. :)

Indianjatt, it’s always best to choose a major that you’re going to be more interested in. It makes the learning experience so much more fun. I rather take hard classes I like than easy ones I know will make me fall asleep in class. I personally dislike essays too, mostly because of my horrible grammar. I rather do a hundred Calculus problems than write a six page research paper. Oh, and in the email UCD sent me, they said you can change your major in the Winter quarter. ;)

Lovefliesx3, that’s cool we’ll be taking many of the same classes! :)
