Biochemistry research

Hey I wanna major in biochem and I was wondering if anyone knew what universities or colleges have very good programs in this area and also which universities have had the most research done into this field.....any info would be much appreciated....

THNX =D

Wisconsin.

http://www.biochem.wisc.edu/index.php

Thnx barrons =D

any more suggestions out there¿¿¿

Hi KemoCGHS -- There are dozens of great programs -- more info would be helpful. Do you want a specific part of the country? Are you looking for a large school, small school? What are your academic stats? This info will be helpful in order to narrow the search and would probably yield more help.

Here are the USNews top graduate programs in biochemistry:

Harvard University (MA)
Stanford University (CA)

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
University of California–Berkeley

University of California–San Francisco

California Institute of Technology

Yale University (CT)

Johns Hopkins University (MD)

Rockefeller University (NY)

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center–Dallas

University of Wisconsin–Madison

Note that this is a ranking of the graduate programs, not the undergraduate programs, but these are certainly among the top research programs, and they will allow undergraduates to get involved in research projects.

Note also that some of these schools (UCSF and Rockefeller; not sure about UT-Southwestern Medical Center) are graduate-only, and so would not be good choices for undergrad. :)

hehe good idea musicmomic.....

k well here goes:

I'm specifically looking for a school in the east coast, preferably in the Northeast....i have no problem with attendin a LAC and i would prefer if the school didnt have more than 15k students, more or less

My stats:

I'm mexican, immigrated here when I was 7, been here since then
3.0 gpa, in the IB program at my school in Miami, FL
taking hardest courses at my school, top 20% of class of 850
ACT composite: 29 (taking again this saturday)
SATIIs --> taking in november...Chem, Math I, Spanish w/ listening
This year I'm taking:
-AP/IB Bio
-AP/IB Chem
-IB Business
-IB English
-IB Math Studies
-IB French V
-Research I

im also interning at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the Ocular Oncology lab there where I'm helping with the research goin on there, specifically in a grant lookin into retinoblastoma

EC's:
Interened at NEU's Latino Student Center over the summer
NHS executive board member
FNHS
IBHS
Amnesty I'ntl --> This is one of my main clubs, right after NHS.....here ive basically just helped with petitions and walks to inform ppl about human rights issues, especially about the Genocide in Sudan.....

and thats all i can think of right now....so ya any idea of a good schools with top Biochem programs and that are renowned for research in this area¿¿¿

thnx for all the help =D

thnx for that molliebatmit =D

bump bump bump
any more ideas¿¿

Others have posted this list and I think it's a helpful ranking for general science strength. There are numerous LACs and Northeast schools from which to choose. Your stats will make some of these a reach. If you're willing to venture outside of the Northeast, your chances might be better.

Finding specific research opportunities in the area that you are currently working will be tricky. Looking at published scientific articles and tracing the authors' university affiliations would be a start.

Good luck.

Here are the 100 colleges an universities that have the highest percentage of their graduates going on to get a PhD in science, math, or engineering over the most recent 10 year period. It might give you some good ideas:

PhDs per 1000 graduates

Academic field: All Engineering, Hard Science, and Math
PhDs and Doctoral Degrees:
ten years (1994 to 2003) from NSF database

Number of Undergraduates:
ten years (1989 to 1998) from IPEDS database

Formula: Total PhDs divided by Total Grads

Note: Does not include colleges with less than 1000 graduates over the ten year period
