bioe bs/ms as an alternate if medschool doesnt work out

Hey, I am oos and want to do premed. I was wondering whether or not it is feasible/a good idea to go to uw doing the bioe bs/ms program and then quitting it if I get into med school. I honestly wouldn't be crushed or anything if i didn't make it to med school because I am also really interested in bioengineering. Anyways, I was just wondering if this is a possibility at all. Thanks.

buuuuuumpp

anybody? please?

Heh…they don’t let just anyone into BioE BS/MS, silly. I think you’d actually have an easier time getting into a med school than getting into UW BioE.

In the sense that both pathways are going to be very difficult, I’d say this is a bad plan.

Also, a LOT of med students don’t make it on their first time applying…and the average age of those accepted is 24 or something, ergo most med students don’t get in immediately after undergrad.

I know that both are very difficult. But because my interests lie in both areas, I would double my chances of doing something that I would enjoy if I went for both the bs/ms and med school. I might be turning down cornell for the bs/ms at UW since the graduate bioe program there is one of if not the best in the country.

This is true, and even the undergrad program has jumped up in the rankings (#7, I believe? …grad school is still #5, though).

Anyways, I’ll probably be joining the major this year, and I think it’s a gross exaggeration to say that med school is easier to get into. Bioe honestly isn’t that selective; however, it’s not a bad plan to have some sort of backup major in mind. Unfortunately, they’re not doing direct admission this year, so you can’t just apply and be automatically admitted.

Check out this webpage for some more info:

[Apply - Undergraduate Programs - Prospective Students - Education - Bioengineering -UW College of Engineering - University of Washington, Seattle](http://depts.washington.edu/bioe/education/prospective/educ_undergrad_apply.html)

You could apply for Early Admission at the end of freshman year, or do Upper Admission in the middle of Sophomore year.

If you have some sort of college credit, that will probably help; it’s good if your UW GPA will be > 3.6, too. If you are a good student, this is easy enough to achieve…basically, look over some of the info in that link and see if you think things will work out for you. If wouldn’t hurt to email the undergraduate admissions advisor either (knichols@u.washington.edu) and see what her opinion is on any of your questions or your situation.

As for your original question, I don’t know if it would work out. You would probably only find out about med school decisions after becoming part of the BS/MS program, and I don’t know if you could just randomly quit the program. On the other hand, I don’t see why you couldn’t, either…you’d have to talk to and advisor for this info. It’s a good plan, though; if you don’t get into med school, having something planned for that year after college is smart, and you can just apply for med school again.

Ok, I have to leave or I’ll be late to Sanskrit…I hope my ramblings were somewhat useful.

I am actually a junior right now so I would enroll in bioe in fall of 2011. I believe they are bringing back direct admission that year. Your ramblings have indeed been helpful, I appreciate it. I suppose I wouldn’t HAVE to do the bs/ms but just apply to both grad school and med school, and obviously take med school over grad school if I get in. I don’t think I would bother applying again if I don’t get in the first time though.
