bioE vs chemE at cal

So I was accepted as a bioE major at cal, but I'm beginning to have second thoughts about it and am considering to switch to chemE w/biotech concentration in the College of Chemistry. Ultimately, I want to be able to do research with cancer and stuff like that.

While I do love biology, I'm scared that the bioE program at cal is a bit too new and the not many people want to hire bioengineers. Also, I hear that bioE is actually more stressful than EECS at cal and I would like to get a perspective of what both current bioE's and chemE's have to say about this. They say to do what you love, but if what you love can't land you a job, that won't be any good either :P. However, I like the fact that chemE w/ the biotech concentration still lets me take some UD biology classes.

So, sorry if this whole post sounds like a mess, but if any bioE or chemE majors could help me out with this, that'd be great! Thanks! Go BEARS!

I’m also in a similar dilemma and will also like to know much more. I suggest you get to Berkeley and in spring make any decisions though, also since the classes are the same for any.

chemE !

I would say BioE is very slightly better if you want to do cancer research since there are a lot of research openings targeted towards the major. Its also in the college of engineering.

However, overall Job prospects should not be an issue–ChemE with Biotech or BioE should net you similar job opportunities.

BioE along with EECS and Engineering Undeclared are supposedly hard to get into, so congratulations.
