Hey I'm a rising senior looking to apply to Berkeley in the fall, and I'm sort of on the border for cal and I'm wondering if I should apply to Coe for bioengineering or l&s for biology and possibly try to transfer, I like both majors but favor bioeng, but I'm afraid that I'll be denied because of the competitiveness into the Coe. Any insight is greatly appreciated

I play varsity lacrosse and have won awards for leadership, I volunteer in a hospital 12 hrs a week will have approx. 200 hours by apps, and for senior year I'll be interning at a local biotech company.

Don’t worry about the competition of CoE compared to L&S. There are very few people in between who could’ve got into L&S but not CoE; it’s either you’re smart enough to get into either schools or just not competent for either one. The more important question is, how good are you in math?

Well that’s good news I’d hate to have to regret choosing a major. I’m definitely good enough in math for engineering though, it’s always been my favorite subject.

Anyone else know anything on the subject?

yeah. just apply bioE. ive heard from several peopl that it is way easier to just apply as a frosh and get into the program than it is to apply as a L&s major, take the engineering prereqs and get the 3.2 or minimum you need to switch into CoE.

gl :)

Alright it’s settled! Thanks :)

Is everyone being nice? Aren’t the scores & GPA pretty low? The hospital thing and the local biotech company internship are the only things possibly going for you. I think you should really consider how you will sell those two activities.

^Are you talking about increasing your chances of getting into Berkeley? You don’t need that fancy stuff to get admitted. College internships are barely legit w/ confused students not knowing what to do; I don’t know how high school internships can get any worse.

The scores and GPA are not particularly low, no. I graduated HS with a 3.72 UW GPA and 2290/33 SAT/ACT, and was still admitted.

I recognize that my scores aren’t as high as they should be to be guaranteed but I have more on my resume than just this stuff, and I’m fairly certain my essay is going to be really good, I’m not worried about getting chanced admissions can be so random it really doesn’t help, but I appreciate the feedback. I am wondering the biotech thing can be pretty much anything I want it to be (job, intern(paid/unpaid), etc.) what do you think would be the best title to give something like that on a resume. I really don’t care as long as I’m getting experience so this is purely based on what would seem the most legitimate.

@graysonc you have 110 more on your sat and that makes a big difference. it will be harder for him to be admitted to BioE than it would to just l&s, especially with a lower than average GPA

Probably just apply to CoE. Your math scores seem kind of low in comparison to the scores of most other engineering students though…are you sure engineering is what you want to do?

I’m almost certain but I might just go for biology I’ll have to talk to someone with more knowledge in both areas etc. The only problem I have in math is I finish too quickly and sometimes make easy mistakes
