Im a transfer student, majoring in bioengineering. I confused about where to go, I was accepted to uc's merced santa cruz and riverside for bioeng. cal poly slo, san jose sate and csu long beach for biomedical eng. which school is better in terms of rankings, academic and student life, eng programs, etc. I did my research and I think cal poly is higher in ranking and better program, any opinions, comments. I live in the merced area so uc merced is closest but my concern is that it is a relatively new school. Also i know bioeng is more of a general major and biomed is related to medical field/ tech. would it make a difference if i graduate as bioeng or biomed in terms of jobs, salary etc.. one more question i saw a few forums from 2008 2010 2012 that bioeng graduates were having really hard time to find a job even though is the one with more growth, is this still true? that companies prefer to hired a ME EE or any other related eng than bioeng. any comments. Thanks in advanced

Without hesitation, go to Cal Poly SLO.

Since your question is more about the schools/programs/jobs than the transfer process, you might consider also posting on the College Search & Selection forum (gets many more views) and the Engineering Majors forum for members who might have more experience in this specific field.

I will echo Gumbymom above. Cal Poly SLO is without question the best school of the lot. Biomed at Cal Poly is highly sought after and VERY difficult to get into. You are one of just a small handful accepted each year. I’ve actually never heard of a transfer acceptance before at Cal Poly for Biomed. I am not saying that they don’t accept transfers at all. This is just the first time that I’ve personally seen it in the last 3 years that I have been casually tracking it.

Anyway, we just came trough a recession and it is possible that there has been a lull in biomed hires, but I am not really aware of any such trend. The field itself is hot. I’ve toured the biomed facilities at Cal Poly and was amazed at what they were doing. I saw students growing human ears!! It blew my mind.

ME and EE tend to be very popular hires because they are general in nature and therefore very flexible. I also know that you can change major within the Engineering college fairly easily at Cal Poly contrary to what you might have heard. However, for a transfer it might be more difficult as you are further along in the process. Bottom line, if you have a passion for biomed then stick to it. The cream of the crop and those with passion for their major will always get great opportunities.

may I ask where are you transfering from and your GPA? My daughter is thinking about going CC then transfer to BioMed. She has 3.9 GPA but SAT is low. The competition is too high to go straight to SLO, or other UCs, i think.
