biological engineering

hello, I am new on CC and was wondering if anyone was familiar with the biological engineering major at uf? I saw that it was ranked highly on us news, and was wondering if anyone knew about the strengths of the program, and what it had to offer.

thanks

bump, bump.

I think you are a little confused. Biological engineering has been at UF for quite a long time, and UF has indeed become one of the top programs in the world for this. Their website is here:
http://abe.ufl.edu/

However, bioMEDICAL is a new undergraduate program at UF, but has been a graduate program for a while. I don’t know much about it, but I am sure you could call their office and ask to speak to their undergraduate coordinator. Also, more information is available here: [Undergraduate | www.bme.ufl.edu](Undergraduate Admissions – J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering)

I do know they have a new department chair coming in January, who is really fantastic with a great vision for growth for the department.

Oh no, I meant Biological Engineering haha. Do you know anyone majoring in it? I know that it’s been around for a while, and it’s a very strong program at UF. I emailed an adviser, and they told me that it aligns pretty well with the pre-health curriculum (I plan on continuing on to professional school). I just wanted to know what opinions people had on the major.

The undergraduate program is brand new, and I don’t think they have accepted any students yet for it. I believe in your sophomore year, you apply for admission to that program. I am not certain, though, as I am in industrial. I would just check out their website or call them for more detailed, accurate information.

Do you mean biomedical engineering?

Hey, guys, I am interested in attending either UF or SLU (Saint Louis University–private school) for an English major with an emphasis in creative writing (minor in Biology and Medical Humanities) on a pre-med track. SLU has a medical scholars program that guarantees (98% matriculation rate for those meeting 3.5+ GPA–MCAT bears no weight in acceptance) acceptance into the medical school, and that is definitely a big relief. Cost is not a consideration, for I have a full ride at any almost any school I want (benefits of being a military child with a Post 9/11 GI Bill). UF, on the other hand, is more highly ranked, and although SLU is respected, UF is a good 30+ spots ahead of it. If in my position, which would you choose? What is the percentage of UF undergraduates matriculating into medical school, and is maintaining a high GPA relatively doable? Thanks for the help!

@mfhettig- that is biomedical engineering, not biological engineering. Biomed is brand new, the first class will be fall 2012. You could have only applied during your junior year, and the deadline passed in march. Regardless the OP is asking about another major, not that one.

Choose the school that you feel most comfortable with. Personally, I love UF and know that the research opportunities here are astounding. As a pre-med student, you’ll have a lot of opportunities here at UF. You can join medical related clubs, participate in the science for life program, find numerous volunteer and internship opportunities at Shands, Moffitt, etc., and even apply for UF’s own 7 year BS/MD program (be warned though; it’s very competitive! most accepted applicants have around a 3.9 GPA!)

Choose the school that you feel most comfortable with first. That’s what matters the most. However, UF is a great school with lots of opportunities, and you definitely can’t go wrong here :D
