biological science vs. chemistry for pre-med

hey y'all, im going to be a senior next year in HS and so ive been looking at colleges and majors to go into. I wanna go to med. school after undergraduate so i'll probably go into premed. however, i do not know which pre-med major to pick. I took a general biology class freshmen year, and took chem, and AP chem soph. and junior year, and i have to take AP physics next year. I would take AP bio but i cant fit it into my schedule since i have to take a stupid art class.

so my question is: what major is the best option? go for chemistry after not taking a chem. class senior year? or take like microbiology, biochem, or molecular biology?

Well, which subject do you like the most? It doesn't matter if you took AP classes in the subjects, because the college classes will cover that stuff anyway. I didn't take AP Chem, for example, but I still did fine in my inorganic chemistry classes this year (here's hoping that next year in orgo will be good too!). If you can't decide between biology and chem, then biochem would be a good option, but you don't have to limit yourself just yet. Go to college and take your premed chemistry, biology, and physics and then you can make your final decision about your major. Most science majors will require those courses anyway, so you will have several options to choose from. Finally, don't think that just because you are premed that you have to major in a science. You can major in whatever you want, even music, as long as you finish your science prerequisites. Good luck!

you have to decide what you like learning most -- students who major in biology and those who major in chemistry have certain learning strengths and preferences to like one major over the other -- biology stresses memorization very heavily -- in this respect it is alike what learning will be at a medical school -- chemistry stresses figuring things out, seeing patterns -- you only memorize a limited amount of material and then work with it -- it is more like physics and math, so if you liked any one of these two subjects, you'll like being chemistry major -- and if you ever considered going into medical research, learning chemistry will perhaps prepare you more towards that end -- chemistry is a foundation for biology, so being a chemistry major it is easy to pick up on biology later on

you have to also consider the fact that you might not get into any medical school -- you will have to find a job with your major -- consider this possibility and decide whether or you'd like to work as a biologist or a chemist (chemists do get paid a bit more) -- if you do not get accepted, you might consider applying for graduate school in your major, which is somewhat different for biology and chemistry (though they are close enough for biologists to apply to chemistry programs and vice versa)

it does not matter if you take introductory chemistry course without having taken any chemistry -- many people end up doing that -- and as pre-med, one of those days, you will have to take it anyhow without any prior preparation -- take an undergraduate textbook and go over it to see what kind of material is on there then decide for youself
